We recently welcomed colleagues to our summer conference, bringing people together from Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee for our annual event.

There was a genuine buzz in the room at the Apex Hotel in Dundee for an afternoon of firm updates and a celebration of our achievements.

Speakers included our Joint Managing Partners, Emma Gray and Ryan McKay, as well as our Head of Private Client, Laura McDowall, and Chair and Head of Business, Neil Robb. Partner Gillian Donald also spoke with emotion and pride about the Blackadders’ team fundraising for CHAS as their charity of the year.

Guest speaker Dave Coplin provided a fascinating keynote address. Dave has spent over thirty years helping leaders understand what technology makes possible and what we risk losing if we get it wrong. Former Chief Envisioning Officer at Microsoft UK, author of The Rise of the Humans and a non-executive director accountable for the transformation he advocates, Dave makes one central argument: the machines were always going to rise. The only question is whether we rise with them.

It was fantastic to have colleagues from our four Scottish offices together again.

Gifting or trusts? Which is right for your estate?

Gifting and trusts are both commonly used to reduce inheritance tax exposure. Each approach offers different advantages depending on individual circumstances.

Gifting is often the more straightforward option. Assets may fall outside your estate if certain conditions are met, including relevant time limits and available exemptions.

Trusts can offer greater control. They allow assets to be managed on behalf of beneficiaries, which may be preferable in more complex family or financial situations.

Understanding which approach is most appropriate depends on your objectives, the nature of your estate and the level of control you wish to retain.

A fantastic evening was had at the Scottish Young Lawyers' Association Spring Ball on Saturday.

Several of our trainees and young solicitors joined legal professionals from across Scotland at the Glasgow Grosvenor Hotel for an evening of celebration, networking and fundraising.

The Blackadders table also enjoyed some impressive luck in the raffle in support of Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity, with five of our team members taking home prizes.

A huge thank you to the Scottish Young Lawyers' Association for organising such a brilliant event and to everyone involved in supporting such a worthwhile cause.

Gifting and trusts are both commonly used to reduce inheritance tax exposure. Each approach offers different advantages depending on individual circumstances.

What do the upcoming pension changes mean for your estate?

Proposed changes are expected to bring unused pension funds within the scope of inheritance tax from April 2027, marking a significant shift in how pensions are treated for estate planning purposes.

Previously, pensions could often be passed on without incurring inheritance tax. Under the new rules, unused pension funds may now count as part of an estate, which could increase the amount of inheritance tax due depending on the estate’s value and available allowances.

Robyn Lee and Blackadders' Private Client team provide clear, practical guidance to help you review your position and plan effectively for the future.
