Ukraine Permission Extension (UPE) Scheme Update

The Home Office has updated the Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme guidance.

You can now apply to the UPE scheme 90 days before your current Ukraine Scheme permission expires, for both first and second time UPE applications.

This affects people currently holding Ukraine Scheme permission who are planning to extend their stay under the UPE scheme.

Applying at any point within the 90-day window will not reduce the total permission granted. Any remaining valid permission will be added to your new grant.

What you should do:
Check your current Ukraine Scheme permission expiry date.
If your permission expires soon, plan your UPE application within the 90-day window.
Make sure you apply within the permitted timeframe to avoid delays.

Have you checked when your current permission expires?

Please follow our page for more updates.

10/04/2026

From today, 10 April 2026, the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is fully operational for travel into the Schengen area.

The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) is being introduced for travel into the Schengen area and replaces physical passport stamps. It creates a digital record of entry and exit for non-EU residents travelling for short stays (up to 90 days in a rolling 180-day period).

Who this affects
British travellers going to the Schengen area (EU countries except Ireland and Cyprus, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland).

Where registration happens
For travellers using Eurostar at St Pancras, Eurotunnel LeShuttle at Folkestone, or the Port of Dover (known as “juxtaposed ports”), EES registration takes place before leaving the UK. Otherwise, registration happens on arrival in the destination country.

What will happen at the border
First-time registration includes a facial photo and passport scan, and fingerprints for adults and children aged 12 and over. Although EES requires checks on each entry and exit to the Schengen area, once registered, future visits will be more straightforward.

Once registered, travellers will only need to scan their passport and confirm their identity by having either a photo taken or a fingerprint scan. Registration is valid for three years, or until the passport expires, whichever is soonest.

Who is exempt
Brits who are legally resident in Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland or the EU are exempt, so long as they present their residency documents at border control. This includes Withdrawal Agreement residents. UK-EU dual citizens using their EU passport are also exempt from EES.

What you should do
British travellers do not need to do anything in advance. Everything takes place at border control on the day of travel, free of charge. Travellers should allow extra time and follow their travel operator’s guidance, especially if they have connections.

Have you got EU travel booked, and have you allowed extra time for border checks?

VISA BRAKE NOW IN FORCE

From today, 26 March 2026, the visa brake is now in force.

Visa brake: changes to the UK visa system

A visa brake is a restriction that refuses visas for people applying for certain UK visas on specific routes and for specific nationalities.

Which visa applicants does the visa brake affect?
The visa brake applies to:

Student visa applications made outside the UK by main applicants who are nationals of:
Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan.

Skilled Worker visa applications made outside the UK by main applicants who are nationals of:
Afghanistan.

When do the changes take effect?
The visa brake took effect from 12:01am on 26 March 2026.

Any applications submitted online on or after 12:01am on 26 March 2026 will be refused if you are applying for:
• a Student visa and you are a national of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar or Sudan
• a Skilled Worker visa and you are a national of Afghanistan

If you submitted your application before 12:01am on 26 March 2026, it will be processed as normal.

If you currently have a valid UK visa
If you already have a valid UK visa:
• you must continue to follow the conditions of your visa
• your permission remains valid until its expiry date
• your visa will not be cancelled by the visa brake if it has already been granted
• you may still be able to apply for an in-country extension or switch into another route in the UK, if you are eligible

How long will the visa brake last?
The visa brake will be reviewed regularly. It is not permanent, but it will only end when the UK government considers it appropriate to do so.

If you are not applying under one of the affected routes from one of the listed countries, your application will be processed as normal.

UK Digital Permission to Travel – ETA Now Mandatory from today (25 February 2026)

The UK is enforcing digital permission to travel for visitors. From today (25 February 2026), non-visa nationals will be barred from entering the UK without an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

This will affect travellers who normally visit the UK without a visa. Airlines will prevent passengers from boarding if they do not have an ETA, eVisa or other valid documentation. ETAs are also mandatory for visitors who travel to the UK to take connecting flights and go through passport control.

British and Irish citizens, including dual citizens, are exempt from needing an ETA but will be required to present either a valid British passport or Certificate of Entitlement when travelling to the UK.

What you should do:
Check whether your nationality requires an ETA before travelling.
If you need one, make sure your ETA or eVisa is in place before you fly.
If you are a dual British or Irish citizen, ensure you have a valid British passport or Certificate of Entitlement available for travel.

Have you checked whether you will need an ETA for your next trip to the UK?
