How long does it take to get divorced?

It sounds like a simple question, but the answer can vary from one person to another.

Since the introduction of No-Fault Divorce in 2022, we would usually estimate that the divorce process takes around 6-9 months to complete. However, every situation is different. For some clients, additional time may be needed to negotiate financial matters or agree arrangements for children, which can extend the overall process.

There is no need to rush. We will work at a pace that feels comfortable for you, making sure you have the time and space you need to consider your options and make informed decisions.

Divorce can be an emotional and challenging time, so it is important that you don’t feel pressured into making decisions before you are ready. Taking the time to approach matters with a clear head can help you make decisions that are right for you and your future.

If you are considering a divorce or separation, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

With the new school term fast approaching, it’s important to plan ahead and agree child arrangements with your ex-partner to help avoid unnecessary disagreements.

Try to keep communication calm, clear and focused on your children. A shared calendar can be a useful way for both parents to stay informed and ensure everyone is clear about the arrangements for each week.

Where possible, agree a plan for school drop-offs, pick-ups and overnight stays during the week. If you have a work commitment, social event or anything else coming up that may affect the usual arrangements, let the other parent know as early as possible. This gives you both time to make alternative arrangements and avoid last-minute stress.

These two simple steps can make a big difference. Starting a new school year can be stressful enough for children without the added pressure of parental disagreements.

If you would like to arrange an initial meeting to discuss putting a child arrangements plan in place, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Unmarried couples living together has become increasingly common, with many couples choosing to cohabit before deciding whether to marry. 🏠

Living together can provide an opportunity to ensure that you are making the right choice before committing to marriage. However, where there is a disparity in the contributions made towards the purchase price, mortgage or household expenses, one partner can potentially be left financially vulnerable.

A Cohabitation Agreement can help protect both parties by clearly setting out their legal and beneficial interests in the property. The agreement can record who contributed towards the deposit, who is responsible for mortgage and other household payments, and how the costs of any home improvements will be met. It can also set out what has been agreed between the parties and what each person is entitled to should the relationship come to an end.

Where a property is held in one person’s sole name, a Cohabitation Agreement can also help protect their interests and provide greater clarity about the other person’s rights.

If you would like to arrange an initial meeting to discuss putting a Cohabitation Agreement in place, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Heading away on your first holiday together as a couple?

A successful trip could leave you thinking about the next exciting step in your relationship – moving in together.

For many couples, a first holiday is a chance to see how compatible they are and whether sharing a home could work. While it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement, it’s important to take a step back and consider the practicalities.

Do either of you own a property? How will household bills be shared? Who will contribute towards what? Are you planning any renovations or home improvements?

These are all important questions to discuss before moving in together. A Cohabitation Agreement can help set out what you’ve agreed, clarify each person’s financial contributions, and protect your respective legal interests from the outset.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss how we can help, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team.
