The English are a bit like this generally in their relationship with the rest of the world, and I have always thought it ironic that what must be one of the hardest languages to learn has become a lingua franca in so many places.
I post this with the greatest respect for all my clients who write excellently in English as a second (or even, in some cases, third) language when I couldn't even say "Hello" in some of theirs. :)
