Do you think contracts can be made orally or do they HAVE to be in writing?

In most cases, contracts are made in writing as the parties then have a record of what was agreed which can be used as evidence if needs be.
Also, some contracts are required by law to be in writing.
For example, contracts for the sale of land or to provide a guarantee.
