For many married couples, the family home is the biggest asset they own.
That naturally leads to an important question:
“How can we protect our respective shares for the people we eventually want to inherit?”
For some couples, a Property Protection Trust included within their Wills can provide a useful solution.
These arrangements can help provide security for the surviving spouse while also preserving the first person’s share of the property for their chosen beneficiaries.
They are often discussed in connection with care fees.
But their value can go far beyond that.
What Is a Property Protection Trust?
A Property Protection Trust is normally created within a Will.
The trust does not usually take effect immediately.
Instead, it takes effect when the first spouse dies.
Rather than that person’s share of the home passing outright to the survivor, it can pass into trust.
The surviving spouse can normally continue living in the property.
