Upon separation, some unmarried couples who live together are surprised to learn that there are no rights for either to split finances or property, regardless of how long they’ve been in a relationship.

That could all be about to change, however, as the government unveils new plans to reform the legal rights of cohabiting couples, affecting over three million people across the country.
