Major changes to Family Court proceedings in Cumbria 👨‍👩‍👧

From 17 November 2026, a new child-focused approach will be introduced for Family Court cases involving children in Cumbria.

The changes are designed to put children's safety, welfare and experiences at the heart of proceedings, with earlier safeguarding considerations and a stronger focus on understanding each child's circumstances from the outset.

A fantastic evening celebrating three of our newly qualified solicitors 🎉

Sam Fawcett, Josie Britton and Joe Halvorsen attended the Newcastle and Northern England Law Society Awards Ceremony on Friday evening, where all three received certificates marking their qualification as solicitors.

The celebrations continued as Joe scooped the Northern Prize, recognising his outstanding results in his entrance exams.

All three have worked incredibly hard to reach this point, completing their SQE exams alongside their training contracts and balancing their studies with day-to-day legal practice.

Colleagues, including Directors - Mark Jackson, Alan Douglas and Simon Jewitt also attended the evening to show their support and celebrate their achievements with them.

A proud evening for Team Cartmells and a brilliant achievement for all three. Congratulations!

With World Mental Health Day taking place tomorrow, Saturday 10 October, we’re taking a moment to remind ourselves of the importance of checking in with the people around us.

A conversation. A listening ear. Simply giving someone the space to talk. Small things can make a real difference in helping people feel heard and supported.

Here at Cartmell Shepherd, our Mental Health First Aiders and Wellbeing Champions are part of the support available to colleagues across the firm. They’re there to listen, offer support and help point people towards further help when it’s needed.

So this World Mental Health Day, let’s keep checking in with each other, and remember that sometimes it starts with one simple question:

Are you a company director or PSC?

There's action you may need to take 🔎

Companies House identity verification became a legal requirement for directors and People with Significant Control (PSCs) from 18 November 2025, with existing directors and PSCs being brought into the new system during a 12-month transition period.

With deadlines now approaching for many businesses, it's important to understand when you need to verify your identity, how to do it and when your Companies House personal code needs to be provided.
