Family Mediation Cymru Family Mediation Cymru (formerly Family Mediation Cardiff) is a not-for-profit charity. Our service covers all of the above areas.

We have provided professional mediation for separated and divorcing couples throughout South East Wales since 1984. Mediation is a voluntary and confidential process in which the main aim is to help separated/divorced couples reach a mutual, amicable agreement on the general issues that may arise once separated. The main issues that are faced revolve around any children that may be involved (there may be issues with contact arrangements), finance and property issues, and also just improving communication between both parties. We have fully trained, qualified, and professional mediators whose role is to act as an impartial third party who will listen and understand both points of view and help both parties to reach an agreement that is best for everybody. Once we are contacted by someone who wishes to use our service, the process would consist of them attending an individual MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting). At this meeting, the client would meet the mediator and have a discussion about what issues are being experienced, and will get all necessary information from us to then make an informed decision whether they feel mediation can be a useful way of resolving matters. This meeting would also involve a financial assessment, where clients may be eligible for Legal Aid. If so, the service is completely free. The assessment is means-based and would depend upon the current financial situation of the client, how much they earn, if they are claiming benefits and so on. If the client doesn't qualify, the initial MIAM is still free, but there is a Β£40 administration fee if they then wish for us to contact the other party. As mediation is voluntary, it is then up the other party whether they wish to also attend a MIAM. If they do and they wish to proceed, we can then arrange a joint mediation session with both parties. At any point after the initial meeting, if a client doesn't wish to use mediation, they may wish to make an application to court. If so, we can provide a form which will enable them to make that application. A further fee of Β£56 (after the initial Β£40 administration fee) may apply for those who don't qualify for Legal Aid. However if a joint mediation session proceeds, then the further fee for the form is waived.

πŸ’› World Su***de Prevention Day | 10 September

Separation can be one of the most difficult times in a person’s life.

Behind the practical conversations about children, finances, homes and arrangements for the future, there can be a huge amount of grief, uncertainty, loneliness and worry.

For some people, the end of a relationship can feel overwhelming. They may feel that they have lost their family, their home, their sense of identity or even their connection with their children.

Today, on World Su***de Prevention Day, we want to recognise that the emotional impact of separation matters too.

If you are struggling, please don't feel that you have to cope alone. Talk to someone you trust. Speak to your GP. Contact a support organisation. And if you're worried about someone else, don't be afraid to ask them how they really are.

Sometimes, simply asking β€œAre you okay?” can open the door to a conversation that someone desperately needs.

At Family Mediation Cymru, we know that separation isn't just about paperwork and practical arrangements. There are real people, real emotions and real families behind every case.

πŸ’š Be kind. Check in. Listen. Keep the conversation going.

If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, Samaritans are available free, day or night, on 116 123.

🌟 Practice Meeting Day! 🌟

Today was all about bringing the team together for some much-needed time away from the day-to-day public-facing work.

It was lovely to have the opportunity to step back, share experiences, discuss good practice and learn from one another. We’re incredibly lucky to have such a knowledgeable and supportive team, and days like today are a great reminder of the value of coming together. πŸ’š

Family mediation can be challenging work, so taking a little time to pause, reflect and share ideas is so important β€” and, of course, a few laughs along the way never hurt! πŸ˜„

A productive day, lots of good conversations and some great practice shared. πŸ’šπŸ’›

β˜€οΈ Only 34 Days Until the Summer Holidays! β˜€οΈ

With just 34 days until the children break up from school for the summer, now is the perfect time for separated parents to start thinking ahead and making plans.

Some important questions to consider:

βœ… Have you agreed child arrangements for the summer holidays?

βœ… Are you planning to take your child abroad? If so, do you have the consent of everyone with Parental Responsibility?

βœ… Have you discussed who will cover childcare costs if one or both parents need to work during the holidays?

βœ… Are there any concerns about passports, travel documentation, or border control requirements?

βœ… Would you like different arrangements for the summer period compared to your usual day-to-day routine?

The summer holidays can be a wonderful opportunity for children to spend quality time with both parents, but planning ahead can help avoid unnecessary stress and conflict.

If you're struggling to reach an agreement or need advice about child arrangements, parental responsibility, or holiday travel, seeking legal advice early can help ensure the summer runs as smoothly as possible for everyone involved.
