Meet the National Board for Wales: Scott Bowen ⚖️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Scott is a solicitor specialising in criminal law, with experience spanning the full spectrum of cases, including high-profile matters.

He's spent over two decades practising primarily within the legal aid sector, gaining extensive advocacy and case management experience. He represents clients across the magistrates, Crown Court and tribunal systems throughout England and Wales.

As the Law Society Council Member for Cross-Border Work, Scott represents practitioners dealing with matters that span the England and Wales jurisdiction, reflecting his breadth of experience in this area.

He said: “Being a member of the National Board for Wales and a Law Society Council Member ensures that matters affecting members in Wales are properly considered at Chancery Lane, especially now we have a distinct but not separate jurisdiction”.

Meet the National Board for Wales: Dr Bronwen Williams 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🎓

Dr Bronwen Williams is Head of Swansea Law School at Prifysgol Cymru Y Drindod Dewi Sant / University of Wales Trinity Saint David, with over 17 years’ experience in higher education.

She has led the development of degree programmes across law, policing and criminology, including securing CILEx accreditation and establishing the only Welsh paralegal apprenticeships in Wales.

Bronwen is actively involved in the profession through roles on several strategic groups and serves as Chair of the West Glamorgan Magistrates’ Association, Vice Chair of the South Wales Police Ethics Committee and as a presiding justice.

"My involvement reflects a commitment to collaboration, representation, and innovation. I want to help ensure that the future of the legal profession in Wales is inclusive, accessible, and forward-looking, and that it is shaped by a strong partnership between academia and the profession.”

Meet the National Board for Wales: Mark Davies 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Mark Davies is chair of the National Board for Wales and the Law Society Council member for Mid and West Wales. Having practised in Wales throughout his career, he is a director at Goldstones Solicitors and leads the firm’s criminal department.

Qualifying in 1999, Mark specialises in serious and white-collar crime and regularly appears before Magistrates’ and Crown Courts as a High Court Advocate. He also undertakes regulatory work, representing companies and individuals facing investigation and prosecution.

As chair of the National Board for Wales, Mark ensures the views and priorities of solicitors in Wales are represented within the Law Society and inform discussions with stakeholders such as the Welsh Government and Senedd Cymru.

“As a solicitor who has practised in Wales throughout my career, I feel it is important that solicitors in Wales are properly represented. I’m proud the Board helps ensure the priorities of solicitors in Wales are considered at a national level.”

Meet the National Board for Wales: Eve Piffaretti ⚖️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Eve Piffaretti is a partner at Blake Morgan LLP and a specialist public, regulatory and governance lawyer with a broad practice.

She has particular expertise in human rights, equality, consultation, mental capacity and mental health law, alongside safeguarding and Welsh legislation affecting health, social care and education professionals.

As a member of the National Board for Wales, Eve is passionate about supporting diversity, equality and inclusion across the legal profession.

She has also led work around mental health and wellbeing, including collaboration with Mind Cymru on mental health tribunals in Wales.

‘I’m building my career through an apprenticeship – people in Wales should have the same opportunities’

After completing an LLB at Cardiff University, 26-year-old Daniel Onafuwa chose a different route to qualify as a solicitor: a Level 7 graduate solicitor apprenticeship.

Now completing his apprenticeship with Michelmores in Bristol, Daniel is on track to qualify next year.

But in Wales, fully funded Level 7 solicitor apprenticeships are not available.

Daniel explains how it is allowing him to qualify while earning, and why people in Wales should have the same opportunity.

We welcomed Plaid Cymru’s manifesto commitment to introduce Level 7 solicitor apprenticeships and are now calling on the Welsh Government to set out detailed plans for delivering a fully funded programme in Wales.

‘Dwi'n meithrin fy ngyrfa trwy wneud prentisiaeth – dylai pobl yng Nghymru gael yr un cyfleoedd’

Ar ôl cwblhau cwrs LLB ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd, penderfynodd Daniel Onafuwa, 26 oed, ddilyn trywydd gwahanol i fod yn gyfreithiwr: gradd-brentisiaeth cyfreithiol Lefel 7.

Mae Daniel yn bwrw’i brentisiaeth gyda chwmni Michelmores ym Mryste ar hyn o bryd, ac ar y trywydd iawn i gymhwyso y flwyddyn nesaf.

Ond yng Nghymru, does dim prentisiaethau cyfreithiol Lefel 7 wedi'u hariannu'n llawn ar gael.

Mae Daniel yn esbonio sut mae'n caniatáu iddo gymhwyso gan ennill cyflog ar yr un pryd, a pham y dylai pobl yng Nghymru gael yr un cyfle.

Clive Thomas is managing director at Watkins and Gunn Solicitors and has more than 35 years’ experience in the legal profession 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿⚖️

A personal injury specialist, he represents individuals following serious accidents, helping clients rebuild their lives.

Clive joined the National Board for Wales when it was established in 2022. He is also chair of the Managing Partners Subgroup, bringing together firm leaders from across Wales to share insight and support the profession.

He joined the board to contribute beyond his own firm and help shape future policy based on his experience in practice. He said: “I’ve always had a real interest in helping the profession and shaping future policy. The board is focused and dynamic, and we all feel like we’re making a difference.”

Clive is also a Law Society Council Member, representing south Wales.
