Living together but not married?

It's important to know that there's no such thing as a "common-law marriage" giving cohabiting couples the same inheritance rights as married couples in England and Wales.

If you die without a Will, your unmarried partner won't automatically inherit your estate under the intestacy rules.

If you've built a home and a life together, don't simply assume everything will automatically go to your partner.

Make sure your wishes are properly documented.

LPAs aren't just for later life.

It's easy to think a Lasting Power of Attorney is something you only need to consider when you're older.

But accidents, illness and unexpected circumstances can happen at any age.

An LPA allows you to choose someone you trust to make important decisions on your behalf if you're ever unable to make them yourself.

The important part? You need to put one in place before you lose the capacity to make that decision.

Don't wait until you need one to think about getting one.

When your relationships change, your estate planning may need to change with them.

In England and Wales, getting married or entering a civil partnership will usually revoke an existing Will unless it was specifically made in contemplation of that marriage or civil partnership.

Divorce doesn't automatically revoke your entire Will either, although it changes how provisions relating to your former spouse are treated.

And if you're living with a new partner but aren't married or in a civil partnership, they don't automatically have the same inheritance rights as a spouse.

This can become even more important with second marriages, blended families and children from previous relationships.

Life changes. Make sure your Will changes with it.
