We are inspired by our Assistant Office Manager, Amy Oโ€™Shea, who has her own personal experience of su***de. This walk is a chance to remember those we have lost, and support those currently struggling with their mental health.

On 11 September 2026, we are holding our third annual sponsored walk to raise funds and awareness for Grassroots Su***de Prevention.

Dawn of Hopeโ€™ walk is inspired by Office Manager Amy Oโ€™Shea, who has been organising this event since 2024 because of her own personal experience of su***de. This has now become an annual fund raiser for Grassroots Su***de Prevention and Martin Searle Solicitors would like to invite members of the business community to help raise funds and awareness for the important work Grassroots carry out to prevent su***de in our community.

โ€˜Dawn of Hopeโ€™ is in memory of all those who have been lost to su***de and to support those battling with their mental health. Starting at the Peace Statue on Brighton Seafront at 6am, their sponsored walk will proceed along the beach towards Brighton Marina.

For those who wish to join the walk at the Palace Pier, we will arrive at 6.15am. At 7am there will be hot drinks and pastries at Malmaison at the Marina. A representative from Grassroots Su***de Prevention will outline the importance of their work and how your donations help them provide valuable education and support in our community.

To find out more, donate, or to sign up to join the walk, please visit our website: https://www.ms-solicitors.co.uk/dawn-of-hope/

A family sold their mother's home to pay care home fees of ยฃ35,000 a year. Two years later, the money was nearly gone.

Her son, Chris, needed to find ยฃ85 a week that he didn't have to keep his mother in the care home she had finally settled into, or watch her be moved somewhere cheaper against her wishes.

What no one had told Chris was that his mother should never have been charged at all.

After a short initial phone call, our Director Cate Searle identified that Chris' mother had been detained under Section 3 of the Mental Health Act which meant she was entitled to free aftercare under Section 117. Health and Social Services had simply failed in their legal duty.

One letter later:
โœ… Over ยฃ70,000 in fees was recovered
โœ… Chris' mother's care is now fully funded with no charge to her or her family
โœ… She didn't have to move, and Chris didn't have to pay any top-up fees

Families across England are paying for care they are legally entitled to receive for free, not because the law doesn't protect them, but because no one has told them what the law is.

Carers Week is an opportunity to recognise the millions of people quietly holding together our social care system.

They are family members, friends and neighbours who have stepped in, often without any support, training or legal advice, to care for someone they love, or someone in their community.

What does this look like in numbers?

โžก๏ธ In England alone, there are 4.7 million unpaid carers
โžก๏ธ 10.3% of women provided unpaid care and 7.6% of men
โžก๏ธ There are roughly 120,000 young unpaid carers aged between 5 and 17 years

Unpaid carers have stepped in to prop up a care system that is failing. Many of our clients are unaware of what support they or the people they care for are legally entitled to.

That's why we run our Social Care Funding Matters campaign every June, to make sure families and carers can access free, confidential legal advice about their rights under the Care Act.

Our Community Care Law team is offering free 30-minute advice calls every Tuesday and Thursday, 3.30โ€“5.30pm, till the end of the month. If you are an unpaid carer, or know someone who is, please share this.
