Stepping into the High Court is a major milestone for any aspiring lawyer, and nothing quite compares to seeing the law in action.
Our Dispute Resolution team recently attended a hearing at the Business and Property courts in London, representing our client in a complex derivative action.
Department head, Brendan Herbert, led the case, supported by our apprentice solicitor, Jackson Warriner.
This was Jackson’s first time appearing in the High Court and was a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable, first-hand insight into how legal arguments are presented and challenged in real time.
Here are Jackson’s top three takeaways from the day:
✏️ Derivative claims are specific: Derivative claims are specialised types of legal claims brought by a shareholder on behalf of the company and cannot be treated like standard civil claims.
✏️ Judges guide the narrative: The judge’s questions don’t just test arguments; they help shape the direction of the whole hearing.
✏️ Pace is key: Cases can move quickly, so you have to be ready to adapt as the situation in court changes.
A great experience and a valuable insight into how High Court work operates in practice.
