You must also hold the immigration status required for that route.

Many people assume that years spent living in the UK automatically make them eligible for British citizenship.

For many applicants, eligibility depends on holding:

**Strong ILR Applications Can Still Fail on Evidence .**

ILR applications succeed or fail on evidence.

The Home Office assesses the documents and information submitted with an application. It does not assess what an applicant intended to provide.

An individual may satisfy the requirements for settlement, but if the evidence does not clearly demonstrate eligibility, those requirements may be difficult to verify.

Missing, incomplete or inadequate supporting documents can create avoidable complications, delays and potential refusal risks.

Strong evidence helps establish eligibility. However, evidence alone cannot overcome an underlying eligibility issue.

**Five Years in the UK Does Not Always Mean ILR**

One of the most common misconceptions about settlement is that length of residence alone determines eligibility.

It doesn't.

Different immigration routes have different requirements, qualifying periods and evidential expectations.

The Home Office will assess the specific immigration category being relied upon and whether all applicable settlement requirements have been met.

Even a strong immigration history may not overcome an application submitted under the wrong settlement route.

**Meeting the Residence Requirement Is Not Enough**

For many immigration routes, passing the Life in the UK Test forms part of the eligibility requirements for settlement.

A common mistake is focusing solely on the qualifying period of residence while overlooking other mandatory requirements.

**A Single Absence Can Create Settlement Problems**

One of the most misunderstood aspects of an ILR application is continuous residence.

Many applicants focus on the total number of years they have lived in the UK. However, the Home Office will assess whether the relevant residence requirements have been maintained throughout the qualifying period.

Simply reaching the required number of years does not automatically mean settlement requirements have been met.
