MHCLG has published fire prevention and protection statistics for England for the year to March 2026. Audit volumes were essentially flat at 50,195, down 1.6% on the previous year. Four in ten of those audits were recorded as unsatisfactory. What has changed is what happens next.
Formal notices rose 11% to 3,355. That is 46% higher than six years ago. Enforcement notices under Article 30 accounted for 1,896 of them. Prohibition notices under Article 31, which restrict or stop the use of premises outright, rose 27% in a single year to 1,224.
The breach data tells you where duty holders are being caught. Article 14 on emergency routes and exits remains the most cited, with 11,286 breaches recorded, up 9.3%. Article 17 maintenance, Article 9 risk assessment and Article 8 general fire precautions all increased by double digits or close to it.
