What a consent order does ✍️

If you've reached an agreement on financial matters following a divorce or civil partnership dissolution, you may wonder why a Consent Order is still necessary.

While a divorce legally ends a marriage, it does not automatically prevent future financial claims between former spouses or civil partners. A Consent Order turns your agreement into a court-approved, legally binding arrangement, providing greater certainty and protection for the future.

The court will also consider financial information to ensure the agreement appears fair, making accurate disclosure and careful drafting essential.

What a fantastic evening it was, honouring the remarkable career of HHJ Richard Scarratt!

Mary-Joyce said 'It was a pleasure to attend alongside colleagues from Arthurs Solicitors, Sophie Sherlock, Ian Chivers and Naomi Smith as we gathered to celebrate his exceptional judicial journey and the significant influence he has had on colleagues, practitioners, and the broader legal community, especially in Kent.'

From serving as the Designated Family Judge for Kent to leading the COCJ, his contributions to the judiciary have been immense. Thank you, HHJ Scarratt, for your decades of unwavering commitment to the justice system!

What a week!

On Monday 8 June, Mary Joyce attended the Oasis garden party as a trustee, hosted by the Sunley Family and Oasis at the beautiful Godmersham Park estate. Mrs Fiona Sunley kindly opened her home, with guests including the Detective Chief Superintendent of Kent Police and the High Sheriff of Kent.

They heard from the inspiring Aston Vicary and celebrated the incredible work Oasis does supporting victims and survivors of domestic abuse. It was also lovely to catch up with friends and colleagues (and enjoy some amazing cakes!) before heading off to the London Legal Walk the next day.

Mary Joyce led the London as President of the Kent Law Society with colleagues and supporters, raising £540 for legal charities. What a brilliant day walking together, connecting with peers, and supporting access to justice!

A huge thank you to everyone who donated.
Mary Joyce says, “Didn’t exactly clock up any walking miles in these shoes… but trust me, it’s been a week!”

Reaching an agreement after divorce can feel like the final step—but when it comes to finances, it may not be the end of the journey. ✍️

An informal agreement does not always provide the long-term protection and certainty you need. A Consent Order allows the court to approve your agreed financial settlement, making it legally binding and helping to prevent future disputes.

Whether your agreement involves property, pensions, savings, maintenance or other financial arrangements, obtaining legal approval can provide valuable peace of mind for the future.

Congratulations Angela Arnold on your inauguration as president of Sussex Law Society.

I was delighted to attend the inauguration of Angela Arnold as President of the Sussex Law Society by representing the Kent Law Society in my capacity as President. Angela delivered a highly engaging and heartfelt speech, addressing crucial topics such as the influence of AI and technology on the legal system, emphasising that they should never dictate the rule of law. She also shared poignant reflections from her own personal journey.

The evening provided the perfect opportunity to reconnect with colleagues such as Neive Augustin and forge new connections with other Presidents of the Law Societies invited including Theresa Mills and Leanna Ellis. It was also great to meet and connect and have engaging conversations with the amazing Councillor Bella Sankey Leader of Brighton & Hove City Council & Labour Councillor for Wish Ward and Councillor Janet Baah former Mayor of Lewes Council & Councillor of Lewes & Eastbourne all whilst enjoying the divine Caribbean cuisine on offer at The Grand Hotel Brighton .
It was a memorable occasion with music from the legendary Ray Lewis from the Drifters , and I extend my warmest congratulations to Angela Arnold. I am confident she will excel as President of the Sussex Law Society.

📜 Is your will still fit for purpose?

Life changes quickly — but many people don’t update their will often enough. Events such as divorce, remarriage, new grandchildren, or major financial changes can mean a once suitable will no longer reflects your wishes.

Reviewing your will regularly can help protect your loved ones and avoid unnecessary complications in the future. ⚖️

It’s a reminder of how important it is to keep wills updated and seek advice early to help protect loved ones from unnecessary stress and uncertainty later on.
