It is with mixed emotions that I confirm David’s retirement as a Director and shareholder in the business. That will take effect from 31 December 2023.

Being a Solicitor wasn’t David’s first choice in life. He worked for his father before setting off on his own for a while. Later, he decided to study law at Nottingham Trent University, before completing the Legal Practice Course and a Training Contract. David was admitted as a Solicitor in November 2008. As a newly qualified Solicitor, David specialised in private client matters, provided Wills, Powers of Attorney and Estate Administration advice to clients. That is where our paths crossed and a new chapter began.

David and I started the business on 5 April 2011, originally trading as a partnership under the name of ‘Killingworth & Parrott’ from our tiny office on Bridge Street. At the time, we had the benefit of David’s two daughters, Claire & Phillipa, and my mother in law, Pam, also came out of retirement to help out. David generally concentrated on helping clients in the local community with their private client needs and property matters, became involved in community groups and helped raise the profile of our small firm.

We started with nothing, took each day as it came and applied the fundamental beliefs we held dear to us. Like other businesses, we’ve taken a few beatings, weathered some storms, and generally had our up’s and down’s. We’ve faced many challenges along the way. We learnt lessons from things we think we could have done better, and we’re proud of the things we think we did well. One of the defining points for us was the purchase of the derelict building on Chapel Street. We put even more blood, sweat and tears into that project, bringing the property back to life, knowing that the space and location would help reduce the pressures on us and our staff, whilst also improving our business profile.

Whilst retiring from the business, David will remain as a consultant, providing his knowledge and skills to the rest of us in the firm. Others in the firm will take on the responsibility of matters typically assigned to David, ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining the levels of service our clients have come to expect.

David and I have been supported by a number of colleagues over the years and we would like to thank him for his significant contribution to the firm. I am sure you will join us in wishing David all the best for the future.

We are delighted to announce that Angela McGuckin has become a Director at Killingworth & Parrott.

Angela began her career as a paralegal in 2003 before training as a solicitor and qualifying in 2007. She gained a wealth of experience before joining us in 2020 as a Private Client Solicitor, dealing with wills, powers of attorney and estates, to name a few.

Angela’s progression to a Director is a natural step and is particularly well deserved given her approach and commitment to the firm and its clients.

It has always been important to us to have one eye on the future of the business. Angela’s progression to a Director means that she has become a manager of the firm, alongside David Killingworth and Stephen Parrott, and she will help make the important decisions on our journey ahead.

Today marks our tenth anniversary at Killingworth & Parrott Solicitors.

Given how quickly time flies, it seems like only yesterday that we opened up in the smallest of spaces on Bridge Street in Belper, with people referring to as ‘The Old Jacket Potato Shop’ even after we moved in.

Having created the firm from nothing in the midst of a recession, we outgrew our original office space in the first few years and spent a significant amount of time looking for an appropriate alternative. This eventually came in the form of a derelict building at 65 Chapel Street in Belper, which we had admired for many years. Clearly needing something else to do, we took on the building and brought it back to life, before moving our firm in to the fully refurbished building in July 2019. That move has enabled us to expand considerably, providing space and facilities for our staff and clients, although it does make us wonder how we managed for so long in our previous office!

Our client base has expanded over the years, with many clients returning to us for repeat business or referring their family and friends to us. We take great pride in that and thank them for all the feedback they have provided to enable us to develop our business over the years. We are, after all, here to help them and this is shown in our core values of providing high levels of service with no hidden costs, and to act with integrity and independence.

Like many firms, we concentrate on specific areas of law. For us, that includes residential and commercial property transactions, leases, charities, trusts, powers of attorney, wills and probate matters. However, we have established links with other firms covering other specialists areas of law to ensure that we are able to provide a link to those firms when the need arises.

Whilst our staff has changed over time, each of them (past and present) have contributed to our story. Without them, we would not be the firm we are today.

As a small local business, we wanted to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of our clients, contacts and staff, who have helped contribute to our success. We would like to pay particular and special thanks to our respective wives, Anne Killingworth & Jo Parrott and our wider families. Without their unwavering support, our successes would not have been possible. Our ten years have been hard work but we are immensely proud of what we have achieved. With your continued support, we see a bright future for the firm.
