Breaking News: No Fault Divorce Approved

Some breaking news this morning as divorce law is given an overhaul:

Under current rules to obtain a divorce one party must prove adultery, unreasonable behaviour or desertion. Otherwise they will need to be separated, living apart for over 2 years (with consent of spouse) or over 5 years (without consent of spouse).

These new rules mean that many people who have just grown apart or want different things can now move on without having to play the 'blame game' or wait years to legally part ways.

After years of campaigning, media attention and a recent 12 week public consultation it has been announced this morning that the ‘no fault’ divorce has been approved by Government and will be introduced ‘as soon as parliamentary time allows’.

No longer reserved for the rich or famous - pre-nuptial agreements (or pre-nups) are becoming more common place in the UK. They can help protect wealth / assets obtained prior to the relationship such as properties or family inheritance. A pre-nuptial agreement can make for a stronger relationship where both parties know where they stand should the marriage not stand the test of time.

Come and see us any lunchtime this week for a free 15 minute appointment with one of our specialist family lawyers.

Helping the NHS to Help Us: Going Vegan?

Many people have chosen to reduce the amount of meat or animal products in their diets for a number of reasons; including health, environmental and ethical.

Whatever your stance on the subject, it is worth considering what the impact of such diet changes could have on our over-stretched NHS, which sees millions of avoidable diet-related cases every day.

11 million deaths per year are caused by diet-related diseases.

Veganism has been one of the fastest moving ‘trends’ over the last few years. The topic has been hotly debated online, well covered in the press, endorsed by countless celebrities and has seen a surge of new plant-based food lines, businesses, shops and restaurants. If 2019 is the year you get married there will lots of excitement and planning. Sometimes the more practical preparations get overlooked.

You may want to explore the benefits of making a Pre-Nuptial Agreement with your partner. Not the most romantic of conversations, but a useful tool to protect yourself or any assets should the relationship break down in the future.

How to Tell Your Children about Divorce: An Age Appropriate Guide

Breaking the news of separation or divorce to your children is not an easy conversation to have. Our Family Lawyers provide a few pointers that may help, along with a guide of how to approach this talk with different aged children...

We are supporting Resolution's 'Good Divorce Week' campaign and this year the theme is minimising the impact of conflict on children. This week we are offering a free 'Tea & Talk' every lunchtime at our offices (no need to book) and we are also sharing relevant articles online which we hope will help parents going through a separation.

For further information please get in touch with Julia in our friendly Family Team on 01256 305596.

For parents, telling your children that you are separating or getting divorced can be a rather upsetting and painful conversation. As adults you are likely to have been unhappy for some time or been on a journey through your separation, but for the children it may come as a complete surprise.
