Probate fees are increasing on the 26th January 2022.

On 26 January 2022, probate application fees in England and Wales will increase to GBP273 for both professional and personal applications, under an amendment to the Non-Contentious Probate Fees Order 2004 published in December 2021.

A significant change is coming for people dealing with small estates.

From the 1st January 2022 it will no longer be necessary to complete inheritance tax forms (IHT205 & IHT217) for many small estates.

This applies to deaths from that date and where the value of the estate is below £325,000 (or £650,000 if it was a second death in a couple of a married/civil partnership)

We are pleased to see that digital providers are starting to make it easier to deal with people's accounts after death.

Apple have announced they will introduce a digital legacy page to allow a nominated person to deal with the account.

Linkedin have also introduced an authorisation to allow the access to a deceased's account.

We are going office-free for 2021.

As of this weekend Thomas Simpson Solicitors Will no longer have a staffed office.

Hilary and Rob will be happy to visit you at home or have meetings via videoconference.

We will continue to use our base at Southgate Street for all correspondence.

The Probate Registry keep saying that everything is under control and yet they have just admitted that the backlog of probate grant applications not yet issued now stands at 29,000, an increase of approximately 5,000 since the end of March 2020.

This is causing significant delays in obtaining probate and effecting everything from bank payments to house sales.
