Following a public consultation which concluded in February 2026, the Home Office plans to change the baseline 5-year qualifying period to 10 years for many UK visa routes on settlement pathways.

The plans are for a "merit/contribution" based system, with factors such as economic and social contributions being taken into account i.e. high earners vs reliance on public funds.

The 4 pillars of assessment include good character, required higher level of English Language proficiency, contributions via economic activity and residence compliance.

Proposals have not yet been implemented and no draft Immigration Rules have been introduced yet so existing ILR routes remain in force unless and until amended.

This week I had the privilege of delivering talks at three North West schools on girls’ human rights.

I volunteered because I believe the law is one of the most powerful tools for protection and empowerment — especially for women and girls.

In my immigration practice, I regularly see how legal advice can be the difference between uncertainty and security.

Whether in a classroom or a consultation, my aim is the same: to make the law accessible, strategic and empowering.
