These figures come from the Scottish Legal Aid Board’s own website and show the growing crisis in legal aid in Scotland.
The number of legal aid solicitors in Scotland dropped by 5% in the year to June 2024 and by a further 5% in the year to June 2025. The figures show that all areas of legal aid practice are being impacted.
In 2022 the Scottish Government acknowledged legal aid rates required to be raised above inflation to rectify the damage done by years of underinvestment. Since then there has only been one rate increase in 2023 which was below the rate of inflation. There has been no rate increase since April 2023.
The reduction in legal aid solicitors has long been predicted by the legal profession in Scotland due to years of underfunding. It is now significantly impacting access to justice for those who need it most.
The published figures show the Scottish Government are aware of the extent of the problem yet no action is being taken to address it.
As a firm committed to legal aid practice, we know that the current arrangements are not sustainable. We call on the Scottish Government to urgently review legal aid rates to allow firms to operate sustainably before the crisis deepens further.

***Job Opportunity***
We a firm in Lanarkshire carrying out a range of work such as family law, wills, powers of attorney, guardianship and criminal court work. We are currently looking to recruit at least 2 people to work as an administrative assistant on a part-time basis to work in our Airdrie office, but there may be a requirement to work in our Motherwell or Hamilton office on occasion.

The job would involve a range of legal administrative tasks within the office such as filing, data entry, typing and dealing with legal administration more generally. The successful candidate will gain experience in the administration of files across the range of the work carried out by the firm and will also have the opportunity to become familiar with the software systems used within the firm.

The successful applicants should be personable and able to work as part of a small team. They should also be self-motivated, hard-working and motivated to learn quickly on the job. It is suited to someone who enjoys working in a busy and fast faced paced environment. The successful candidates should also be aiming to pursue a career in the legal profession. Ideally they should be going into the 3rd or 4th year of the LLB. Ideally the successful applicant will also reside in Lanarkshire and be able to work in Hamilton, Motherwell or Airdrie since that will increase the opportunity to gain wider experience with us during the period of employment.

This is a paid position and would be for 1 or 2 days and would be due to commence as soon as possible. The intention would be for it to continue during university term time, subject to the university timetable of the successful candidates allowing them to work on the days required.
