🇫🇷 Renewing your French residency card soon? Here’s one tip… don’t leave anything to chance!

This morning, I renewed my own titre de séjour (French residency card) at our local prefecture, and the whole appointment took less than ten minutes because I had followed their instructions exactly, and made sure that I had every document ready.

Sadly, the gentleman after me wasn’t so fortunate. He was missing the correct passport photos, so instead of a quick appointment, he had to rush out to the local photo studio to try and sort everything out. What should have been a simple €10 job could easily have become much more expensive and stressful.

It’s a good reminder that the little details really do matter.

If you hold a 5-year Brexit Withdrawal Agreement titre de séjour, 2026 is the year you need to renew it.

A dedicated section has now been created on ANEF (Administration Numerique pour les Etrangers en France) for these renewals. You will need to attend an appointment at your local prefecture too.

The 90/180 day rule causes so much confusion, especially for British second-home owners and people dividing their time between countries 🇫🇷

The most important thing to remember is that your allowance does not automatically reset every time you travel.

It’s a rolling calculation based on how many days you’ve spent in the Schengen Zone during the previous 180 days.

If in doubt, always use an official Schengen calculator before making travel plans.

One of the biggest misconceptions we see when people move to France 🇫🇷

Many people assume that because they own a property here, sometimes for many years, Brexit somehow doesn’t apply to them.

But unfortunately, owning a home in France does not automatically give residency rights, and if you plan to stay longer than the 90 days allowed, you’ll usually need to apply for the appropriate visa.

It’s completely understandable why people feel confused. For years, British people, in particular, had the freedom to come and go between both countries with very little restriction, but things have changed significantly since Brexit.
