Fiji Law Society Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Series The Fiji Law Society began 2026 with a strong focus on professional compliance and legal development through a series of CLE workshops covering Anti-Money Laundering, the Legal Practitioners Act 2009, Tax Compliance, Constitutional Law, and Mergers & Acquisitions. Fiji Law Society President, Mr Clarke, senior lawyer, Mr Richard Naidu & council members from the West (Ms Nair, Ms Swamy & Mr Patel) & Suva (Ms Nayacalevu & Ms Rakai) met with Chair of Civil Rules Review Committee, Judge Qetaki & Law Reform Commission staff, Ms Tuivaga, Ms Hicks & Mr Singh to discuss the terms of reference of the work to be undertaken & the concerns of the private bar on the review. It was a good discussion where the Chair spoke about the need to include the private bar & their submissions. The Society expressed the need to have the white book as the bedrock, guidance on amendments being considered on areas that actually needed change & a reference point. Other key considerations was the need to include the private bar in consultations, mediation before trials, interlocutory appeals, appeal court being full time rather than as scheduled 3-5 times a year, addressing technology, ensuring the administrative & resource challenges are addressed, ect.
The CCRC will be in touch on consultations around August 26 & it is hoped that all lawyers will be involved by participating in these consultations as these laws affect every practitioner.

MEDIA RELEASE | Fiji Law Society

The Fiji Law Society expresses grave concern over the reported death of Mr Jone Vakarisi in military custody.

We call for a prompt, independent, and impartial investigation to establish the full facts, ensure accountability, and uphold the rule of law. Allegations of torture or ill-treatment in custody are extremely serious and must also be thoroughly investigated.

All persons in State custody are entitled to protection, dignity, and humane treatment. Transparency and accountability are essential to maintaining public confidence in justice and constitutional governance in Fiji.
