The Adoption Act of 2020 for Fiji officially commenced on 31 March 2025. This new legislation introduces significant, much-anticipated changes to the adoption framework in Fiji, particularly with the incorporation and recognition of the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption within our legal system.

It is essential for practitioners who work within the Adoption space in Fiji to familiarize themselves thoroughly with the provisions of the Adoption Act, as it presents a departure from the 1944 Adoption legislation that has long been the foundation of our adoption practices. The updated Act not only streamlines the adoption process but also emphasizes the importance of safeguarding the rights and welfare of children throughout the adoption procedure.

Please take the time to review the specific provisions and guidelines outlined in the Adoption Act of 2020 to ensure compliance and to provide informed advice to your clients. This law represents a pivotal shift in how adoptions will be processed and regulated in Fiji, and your understanding of these changes will be crucial as we move forward in this new legal landscape.
