At the 4th “Invest in Ethiopia 2026” Forum, it was encouraging to see investment deals worth USD 13.1 billion signed. Two anchor investments account for USD 12 billion, while the remaining USD 1.1 billion comes from Quantum-Everest, Gobez Electric Manufacturing PLC, Sun King, Rashmi Group, and Liaoning Fangda Group Industrial Co., Ltd.
Among these, the standout is the USD 10 billion agreement with Ming Yang Smart Energy Group Limited. According to the Ethiopian Investment Commission, the company will engage in “developing energy infrastructure in renewable energy, hydrogen, and green ammonia production sectors.”
This immediately brought back memories of discussions at the Africa Energy Forum (AEF), particularly the session I attended in Brussels. One key takeaway was the significant role of the shipping industry in global carbon emissions—and the growing consensus that green hydrogen and green ammonia are critical to decarbonizing the sector.
Green hydrogen, produced by using renewable energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, requires exactly what Ethiopia possesses in abundance: water resources and clean energy potential. At the time, the industry was still nascent, with only a few players shaping the conversation. Yet even then, the opportunity for Ethiopia seemed evident.
It is therefore particularly gratifying to now see a major deal materialize in this space—right here in Addis Ababa—leveraging Ethiopia’s natural competitive advantages.
Looking ahead, Ethiopia’s green hydrogen ambitions should align closely with global climate initiatives to maximize impact. The shipping industry alone emits around 1 billion tonnes of CO₂ annually (approximately 3% of global emissions), making it a prime target for transformation.
Ming Yang, a global leader in renewable energy and decarbonization, is well positioned to play a role in this transition. Given that the Red Sea route accounts for 20–30% of global container traffic, there is a compelling opportunity for Ethiopia, together with partners like Ming Yang, to contribute meaningfully to greening one of the world’s most critical trade corridors.
This is not just an investment story—it is a strategic positioning of Ethiopia in the future of global energy and trade. Congratulations to Ethiopian Investment Commission for it’s big success !

Lawyers for Mekedonia Fundraising Campaign Officially Launched!

The Ethiopian Bar Association has established a committee to organize a fundraising campaign under the theme “Lawyers for Mekedonia.” The committee members include Mehrteab, Tilaye, Yonas, Kiya, Zelalem, and Ayenalem.

The committee held its first meeting on February 19, 2025, and officially launched the campaign. Given the urgency of the cause, the committee calls upon all legal professionals—practicing lawyers, judges, prosecutors, in-house counsel, and the broader legal community at both federal and regional levels, including Ethiopian legal professionals abroad—to actively participate in this fundraising effort. The campaign will run for 45 days, concluding on April 5, 2025.

Mekedonia, a local non-governmental organization, currently supports over eight thousand vulnerable elderly Ethiopians. We assure you that every contribution will make a significant impact in improving the lives of these needy individuals.

The committee encourages the active participation of all legal professionals in this noble cause. Committee members are available to assist with any inquiries. Please feel free to reach out to the chair, Mehrteab, the deputy chair, Ms. Aynalem, or any other committee member for further information or support.

Today, I received a short video featuring Zalalem—one of our own, a respected professional colleague. I couldn't be prouder. Alongside his beloved wife, he presented a title deed to Biniam , the founder of Mekodonia! Witnessing this moment was truly inspiring.

At MLA, we have been working to organize a fundraising event for Mekedonia, and it was encouraging to hear Zelalem reference the Bar President’s remarks about our shared responsibility in this effort. Seeing the impact we are making together is incredibly rewarding.

This post is to say congratulations, Zelalem! I have known you for many years, and I know the kindness and generosity of your heart. Today, you deserve the highest praise. Together, we will continue to do more for Mekodonia!

To all our valued MLA clients, partners, and extended family,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! As we reflect on 2024, we are proud to see the progress made and the positive impact it has had on our clients. Notably, the bold reforms undertaken by the government in relation to the forex regulatory regime have been a game-changer. These measures have enabled many of our clients to successfully repatriate dividends that had been stranded for years.

Even this morning, I received messages from clients expressing their relief and satisfaction with these developments. Repatriation, once a major challenge, is now a thing of the past, and we are delighted to witness our clients moving forward with confidence.

Looking ahead, we are optimistic that 2025 will bring even greater profitability and productivity for those operating in Ethiopia's increasingly open market.

Wishing you all a joyous holiday season and a prosperous New Year!

On Sunday morning, I had the privilege of visiting Mekedonia , an organization run by our professional colleague, Mr. Biniam Belete. It was my first time visiting Mekedonia and meeting Mr. Biniam in person, though I’ve been familiar with their remarkable work through the media.
Mekedonia is dedicated to supporting Ethiopia’s senior citizens who are in need—providing them with food, medical care, and dignity. I was deeply impressed by their incredible efforts, but I also witnessed the significant challenges they face. Their facilities need to expand to accommodate the growing number of Ethiopians requiring their support.
I want to make a heartfelt call to all Ethiopian lawyers and beyond to join in supporting Mekedonia’s mission. This includes lawyers practicing in Ethiopia as well as those living abroad in North America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Together, we can make a meaningful impact on this vital initiative.
As part of this effort, MLA will take responsibility for organizing the fundraising initiative to support Mekedonia. My partner, Mr. Getu Shiferaw, and I will share further details soon after a thorough discussion.
Thank you in advance for your support, and stay tuned for updates.

Happy Ethiopian New Year!

The Ethiopian calendar, also known as the Ge'ez Calendar, is rooted in the ancient Coptic calendar and is about seven to eight years behind the Gregorian calendar. As we celebrate the eve of 2017 in Ethiopia, you might find yourself seven years younger if you set aside your Gregorian calendar!

The year 2016 E.C. was a remarkable one for our firm. Our financial performance was reasonably strong, and we had the privilege of gaining major clients such as…. Oh client confidentiality. Most importantly, we were joined by a number of talented young lawyers, with women leading the way. Next year, young graduates might even joke that MLA favors women!

As we bid farewell to 2016 and welcome the New Year 2017, I want to extend my warmest wishes to all the MLA family members, clients, partners, staff, and supporters. HAPPY NEW YEAR! With the significant reforms underway, I am confident that the coming year will be one of exponential growth.

May 2017 be the year your dreams come true!
