🇸🇪 New Swedish Citizenship Rules – Effective 6 June 2026
Sweden has introduced new citizenship rules that make it more difficult to qualify for Swedish citizenship.
🔹 Longer residence requirement
The standard residence requirement has increased from 5 years to 8 years.
🔹 Self-support requirement
Applicants must generally be able to support themselves through stable, long-term income. The guideline is approximately SEK 20,000 per month before tax.
🔹 Language and civics requirements
Applicants aged 16–66 are expected to demonstrate knowledge of:
• Swedish language
• Swedish society
Passing SFI D and other knowledge test may help meet these requirements.
🔹 Stricter good conduct assessment
Criminal convictions and other factors affecting the assessment of a person’s conduct may lead to longer waiting periods before citizenship can be granted.
🔹 Applications already submitted
Applications that were submitted before 6 June 2026 but had not yet been decided are generally assessed under the new rules.
📌 Exceptions apply for certain groups, including Nordic citizens, refugees, stateless persons, former Swedish citizens, young people under 21, and spouses/cohabitants of Swedish citizens.
