We have heard from the Addis Ababa city police that more than 1200 youth are detained for an educational reform of sorts. The federal police legal department also explained that it has the authority to do so with a view to prevention of crime and it is a committee decision. The youth are detained in military barracks. There are few things here.

1. The police does not have authority to detain people for more than 48 hours without the authorisation of the court.
2. The police does not have authority to discipline people.
3. The police obligation to prevent crime does not include detention.
4. The police does not have the authority to detain people in military barracks.

Conclusion: if the police has such power it claims it has, we don't need the constitution. Such power was not given to the police even during the state of emergency. The detention of those youth in military barracks without court authorisation ( the court does not send people to military barracks) is contrary to the Constitution, and other laws of the county. The youth should be released unconditionally.

If the police has such desire of prevention of crime often committed by the youth, there are several alternatives of addressing the issue. Read the criminal code. This action certainly is not one of them.

We, therefore, object to the detention of the Addis Ababa youth in military barracks without the chance their family visiting them.

The people of Addis welcomed president Isayas Afeworki. The sheer size of the people was like a 'tsunami' if I have to describe it in comparison. I would rather say this is the second support for Dr. Abiy. The people wants to express it gratitude and hope. Abiy, I am sure, understands that. It appears, for lack of means, we have kept all our eggs in one basket - HIM! I am assured to see he is better guarded.

The event was colourful. The mood was respectful. The decorum was cordial. The spirit was joyous. Cultures celebrated, religion respected, diversity displayed. It shows the best face of the country.

It can never be better!
