Why Privatize Land? For Whose Benefit And Whose Land? Which Vision Is Best For Ethiopia's Future? Indigenous Knowledge-Based (Gadaa, Luba, Etc.) Land Policy Or The Liberal World-Fetched (IMF) Land Policy?

The debate over land privatization is about far more than economics. At its heart lies a fundamental question: What kind of state/society does Ethiopia want to become?
Will land remain a shared inheritance that supports families, communities, and future generations? Or will it gradually become a commodity owned by those with the greatest wealth and political influence?

For the Oromo, the indigenous Gadaa system offers a very different answer.

Under the Gadaa system, lafa (land) was never viewed as just another commodity to be bought & sold. It was regarded as the foundation of life itself—a sacred trust inherited from previous generations and preserved for those yet to come. People were not considered absolute owners of land but its caretakers. The community, through customary institutions, ensured that families had access to land for farming, grazing, and sustaining their livelihoods while discouraging the accumulation of vast estates by a privileged few.

This philosophy reflects a simple but profound principle: land exists to sustain people, not to enrich a small minority at the expense of society.

Interestingly, the famous slogan "Land to the Tiller," which inspired Ethiopia's 1974 land reform, echoed part of this philosophy. Although the revolutionary government adopted a very different legal model from the Gadaa system, both shared a common objective: ending landlordism & preventing the concentration of land in the hands of a privileged elite.

Today, however, Ethiopia (with IMF) appears to be moving in the opposite direction.

If agricultural land is privatized without effective constitutional and legal safeguards, ownership is unlikely to remain broadly distributed forever. In every society marked by significant economic inequality, wealth tends to buy land. Families facing illness, debt, unemployment, drought, or other financial hardships often have little choice but to sell their land. Reversing the LAND TO THE TILLER principle after 51+ year
