Until June 24, the city of Alicante will completely transform to celebrate its main festival: Hogueras de San Juan (Bonfires of Saint John), officially declared an event of international tourist interest. Under this year’s slogan “A festival that unites us”, the city opens its doors wide to the world, showcasing all the diversity of its art, colours and traditions.

Hogueras de San Juan will reach its climax at midnight on June 24 with the launch of a spectacular palm-shaped firework from Mount Benacantil, marking the beginning of the magical “Night of the Burning” (Nit de la Cremà). As a final highlight, the show will continue from June 25 to 29 by the sea at Coco Beach, where the International Fireworks Contest will take place.

Freelancers in Spain are required to register with the tax authorities as self-employed (autónomo), file tax returns and pay social security contributions. In particular, the taxes paid by freelancers in Spain include:

☑️ Personal income tax (IRPF). Freelancers must file quarterly and annual tax returns. Income tax in Spain is paid on a progressive scale, with brackets and rates set at the regional level. For example, in the Valencian Community the minimum IRPF rate is 18.50% and the maximum is 54%, in Catalonia it is 20% and 50% respectively, and in Andalusia 19% and 47%.

☑️ VAT (IVA), which is itemised separately on invoices. Even when exempt from VAT, returns must still be filed within the established deadlines. The standard VAT rate in Spain is 21%.

☑️ The self-employed quota (cuota de autónomo) — mandatory social security contributions. The amount can range from €200 to €600 per month depending on net income.

Digital nomads are given the option to apply the “Beckham Law” — a special tax regime under which, instead of IRPF with its progressive scale, the non-resident income tax (IRNR) is paid at a fixed rate of 24%. 🤾 Torrevieja City Council launches “Concilia Verano 2026” children’s programme with morning activities and free lunch


Through its Department of Social Welfare, Torrevieja City Council has launched a new edition of the “Concilia Verano 2026” programme, designed to help families balance work and family life during the summer by offering a safe, educational and fun environment for children.

This summer school will run in July and August 2026 at CEIP Maestro Salvador Ruso primary school and is open to children born between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2022 — that is, between 4 and 12 years old — registered as residents of Torrevieja.

📅 Registration is open until 8 June and can be submitted electronically through the City Council’s online portal, or in person by completing and submitting the forms at the Department of Social Welfare.

This year the “Concilia Verano” programme offers a total of 100 places in July and another 100 in August, plus an additional 10 places per month reserved for children who require special educational support.

Among the key new features this year — free lunch from 14:00 to 15:00 for all participating children who request it, and the launch of an early morning group starting at 08:00. The aim is to make life easier for parents who need to start work early.

The full programme schedule:

🔸 09:00 to 14:00: Games and educational activities
🔸 14:00 to 15:00: Free lunch
🔸 14:00 to 15:00: Afternoon group

Applications can be submitted for full months — July or August — or for two-week periods, offering greater flexibility to adapt to each family’s needs.

For many buyers, the biggest obstacle was never the monthly payment — it was the down payment.
