For those of you who have a Spanish car, it is time to go to, for example, the post office and buy a €5 sticker and find out "what color" your car is, so you know where you may not be allowed to drive and thus avoid get fined up to €600 which I have heard rumoured...
It should attach to the lower right corner of the windshield.
Bring the permiso de circulación something that identifies you (passport, ide) + nie number (el recidencia) if you don't have a Spanish driver's license.
Since 1 January 2024, cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants must have a low emission zone (ZBE) in order to reduce pollution. In it, restrictions will be applied to vehicles which in many cases will be governed by so-called DGT stickers or environmental marks.
Therefore, it is normal for drivers to have doubts such as how many types of stickers there are or how they are obtained. We solve them.
TYPES OF DGT ECO STICKERS
There are four types of environmental labels that classify vehicles based on their environmental impact. The categorization originates from the National Air Quality and Atmosphere Protection Plan 2013-2016, which aims to "positively discriminate" against the most environmentally friendly vehicles. The classification of the stickers is as follows
Zero emission (blue color): Reserved for mopeds, tricycles, quadricycles and motorcycles; passenger cars; light vans, vehicles with more than 8 seats and goods transport vehicles classified in the DGT Vehicle Registry as battery electric vehicles (BEV), extended range electric vehicles (REEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) with a minimum range of 40 kilometers or fuel cell vehicles.
Eco (green and blue): This sticker is intended for passenger cars, light vans, vehicles with more than 8 seats and goods transport vehicles that are hybrid or gas powered. Hybrids use fuel and must have a range of more than 40 kilometers on electricity alone. In any case, they must meet the criteria for labeling C.
C (green color): Petrol passenger cars and light vans registered from January 2006 and diesel from 2014. Vehicles with more than 8 seats and goods transport, both petrol and diesel, registered from 2014. Therefore petrol ones must meet the Euro 4.5 and 6 standard and diesel must meet Euro 6. In the case of motorcycles and mopeds, those approved under Euro 4 and Euro emission regulations will carry this label. 3.
B (yellow): For petrol passenger cars and light vans registered from January 2000 and diesel from January 2006. Vehicles with more than 8 seats and goods transport vehicles, both petrol and diesel, registered from 2005. Therefore petrol vehicles must meet the Euro 3 standard and diesel vehicles with Euro 4 and 5. The B marking also identifies motorcycles and mopeds that are approved according to the Euro 2 emission regulations.
I DON'T KNOW WHICH STICKER MY CAR HAS
Many times it happens that we don't know exactly what year our vehicle was registered or what category it would fall into. To make it easier for drivers to know which eco-label corresponds to them, DGT has activated an ECO sticker search engine on its website so that it is only necessary to enter our license plate to receive an answer.
WHAT IF MY VEHICLE DOESN'T HAVE A STICKER?
Diesel cars before 2006 and petrol cars before 2000, as well as motorcycles and mopeds before 2003, do not have an environmental mark or mark as they are considered not to meet the requirements to be labeled as green cars. This fleet is the one that will suffer the most from traffic restrictions during periods of high pollution.
HOW TO BUY THE ENVIRONMENTAL CUT
Once put into circulation, DGT mailed the stickers to drivers' homes based on their vehicle's characteristics. While new cars are given the environmental difference directly at the time of purchase.
All those drivers who for one reason or another do not have the ECO sticker for their vehicle can buy it for 5 euros at workshops, agencies and post offices, presenting the vehicle documentation (traffic permit).
WHERE SHOULD YOU PLACE THE DGT STICKERS
DGT requests that it be affixed to the lower right-hand corner of the front windshield, if available, or if unavailable, in a visible location on the vehicle.
