What do you really want from retirement?

I’m guessing it’s not the brochure version but the real one.

Is it more time outdoors?
A slower, healthier pace of life?
Warm weather that lifts your mood instead of drains it?
A place where daily life feels easy, not complicated?

Or is it connection, culture, good food, and a sense that you are living well, not just passing time?

Most people don’t move for one reason. They move because they want a better everyday life.

Málaga and the Costa del Sol quietly delivers on all of it:
- Sunshine most of the year
- Walkable towns and coastal living
- Excellent healthcare
- An international community without losing Spanish character
- Easy connections to the rest of Europe and the world.

It is not about escaping your life. It is about improving it.

So, what matters most to you when you think about retirement?

Not sure where to live on the Costa del Sol? You're not alone — and it's not as simple as it looks. 🌊☀️
The region spans over 150 kilometres, and two areas just 15 minutes apart can be worlds apart in terms of price, lifestyle, and community. That's why so many people who try to research it online end up more confused than when they started.
Move to Malaga's Orientation Tour is a personalised, privately guided half-day experience that takes you to the areas that actually match YOUR needs — whether that's:
🏙️ Málaga City — a booming international hub
🌊 Eastern Costa del Sol — relaxed, authentic, and great for families
🏖️ Western Costa del Sol — Marbella, Fuengirola, Estepona and more
🌿 Inland Málaga — more space, lower prices, stunning scenery
Tours can even be designed around international school locations for families with children.
All for just €395 + IVA — and it could save you from making a very expensive mistake.

It stopped me in my tracks recently when I realised that my book Moving to Spain with Children was first published back in 2014.

More than a decade ago.

And yet, it honestly feels like yesterday.

At the time, I wrote it because there was so little practical, honest guidance for families trying to figure out life in Spain. I simply wanted to share what I had learned so others could avoid the confusion, the mistakes, and the overwhelm that so often come with a big international move.

I also knew the book wasn’t perfect.
Some early feedback said it was too honest. Too direct.

But that was exactly the point — so I published it anyway.

Since then, something remarkable has happened.
Through the book, and through our work, we’ve had the privilege of accompanying hundreds more people on their journeys to Spain — families with young children, teenagers, couples, and many who arrived on their own to start a new chapter.

The paths are all different, but the courage behind each move is the same.

Every now and then I revisit the reviews, and they always make me smile. Most speak about clarity, reassurance, and practical help. And the only low ratings? One person frustrated they couldn’t read it on a Kindle, and another who felt it mentioned children a bit too much — which, given the title, feels almost poetic.

It’s a reminder that when you create something with a clear purpose, it finds the people it’s meant to help.

Looking back, the biggest lesson isn’t about publishing a book.
It’s about the ripple effect that honest guidance can have over time. One decision, one resource, one conversation can quietly shape hundreds of life stories.

If you’ve been part of this journey in any way; as a reader, a client, a collaborator, or simply someone who’s followed along, thank you!

And if you’re standing at the beginning of your own “what if we moved?” moment, know this: the feeling of uncertainty is normal, but so is the possibility on the other side of it.

Here’s to the journeys still to come. I'm not saying it won't be a rollercoaster but I will be there to help you enjoy the ride!

Decision Sequencing
One of the first issues I assess when advising on a move to Spain is decision sequencing.
Most people focus on individual topics: residency, property, healthcare, tax.
The problem is not a lack of information, but a lack of structure.
Each of these decisions affects the others.
Get the order wrong, and you often limit your future options without realising it.
This is where many well-intentioned plans start to unravel.
If you are planning a move to Spain, I’m interested to know:

Which decision are you currently prioritising, and what led you to that choice?

Information vs Understanding
Many people tell me they are “well researched” before moving to Spain.
In practice, they are usually well informed but not yet well prepared.
Spain operates through layered systems: national law, regional interpretation, local administration, and practical implementation. Understanding how these layers interact is what prevents problems later.
Knowing the rules is not the same as knowing how they are applied.
Which part of the move do you feel confident about?
And which part still feels uncertain?

Assumptions
Most relocation problems do not start with bad decisions.
They start with reasonable assumptions.
“I assumed this would be straightforward.”
“I assumed it could be sorted later.”
“I assumed it worked the same everywhere.”
Assumptions are natural. They are also where risk enters quietly.
Identifying them early is one of the most effective planning tools.
What assumptions have you found yourself making about a move to Spain?

Timing
Timing is one of the least discussed aspects of relocation planning.
Not the move date itself, but when specific decisions are made.
The same choice made earlier or later can have very different consequences for residency routes, tax exposure, and long-term flexibility.
Good planning is rarely rushed.
Which decisions in your planning feel time-critical right now?
And which could safely wait?
If timing is something you’re unsure about, feel free to contact me.

One challenge I see often, especially with well-educated movers, is advice overload.

People speak to different professionals and receive advice that is technically correct, but doesn’t join up.
That’s when planning starts to feel heavy, not helpful.

Have you ever received advice that was correct, but didn’t help you decide what to do next?

Timing is one of the most underestimated parts of relocation planning.
Not when you want to move, but when certain decisions are made.
The same decision made six months earlier or later can lead to very different outcomes.

Which parts of your planning feel time-sensitive right now?
And which parts do you think can wait?

After many years of helping people move to Spain later in life, a clear pattern appears.

When things feel difficult, it is rarely because Spain is complicated. It is often because financial planning and visa rules were not fully understood at the start.

I have worked with many people who assumed their pension or savings would be enough. Or who did not realise that Spain assesses income in very specific ways.
Some did not know that private healthcare is often necessary for the visa process.
