We have had clients contact us after being turned away at the Traffic Department in Cádiz and told that non-residents cannot register a car in Spain.
It is completely untrue and it is allowed by law.
The problem is that the authorities do not like registering vehicles in the name of non-residents because it makes it harder for them to send notifications of fines. But the law is clear and they are required to follow it.
What you need is your passport or NIE, plus any document that proves you have an address in Spain, a property deed, a rental agreement, or your padrón registration will all do. If your deed is more than six months old, bring a nota simple from the land registry as well.
Save this. It is the kind of thing that catches people off guard.
