This is one of those things that’s easy to overlook in the chaos of relocating — but missing it has real consequences.

Once you become a Spanish resident, you have exactly six months to exchange your UK driving licence for a Spanish one. No tests, no lessons needed — just a straightforward swap.

Miss that deadline and you’re technically driving illegally. If you’re stopped by the police, you’re looking at a €200 fine. But the bigger issue is this: in the event of an accident, your insurance company has every right to refuse your claim entirely.

What you need to exchange it:
📋 Valid empadronamiento
🏥 A medical test (quick and inexpensive)

Standard licence categories (A, B, BE) can all be exchanged this way. Once you have your Spanish licence, you can drive in Spain and across Europe as normal.

Six months goes faster than you think — add it to your to-do list from day one.

Share this with someone who’s just moved to Spain or is planning to. It could save them a lot of hassle.

If your plan is to slow down, travel, pick up a hobby, and actually enjoy your days — the Non-Lucrative Visa is what makes that possible.

Who it’s for:
Anyone with passive income, savings, or ideally both, who doesn’t plan to work in Spain.

What you need:
💰 Savings of at least £24,700, or passive income of at least £2,060/month
👨‍👩‍👧 Bringing family? Add £6,183 in savings or £515/month per person

How long it lasts:
You get the visa for one year, then renew it twice for two years each time. After five years you’re eligible for permanent residency. To renew, you need to spend at least 183 days per year in Spain — which, honestly, shouldn’t be a problem.

If retiring in Spain sounds like the plan, book a free call with us and we’ll map out the process for your situation.

Wednesday it rained. Thursday the sun was back like nothing happened😅

That’s Barcelona in September for you — still warm, still sunny, and not quite ready to admit that autumn exists. Technically we’ve got about ten days until the season officially turns, but honestly it doesn’t feel like it out there.

What’s the weather like where you are right now?

Moving to Spain with your family is absolutely possible — and it's not just your partner who can come😎

You can bring your spouse, a long-term partner (a registered partnership known as pareja de hecho may be required), children, and elderly parents if they are financially or medically dependent on you.

💻 If you're applying for a Digital Nomad Visa, your income needs to be sufficient to cover all family members.

☺️ The same applies to the Non-Lucrative Visa — your passive income or savings need to account for everyone making the move.

👩‍❤️‍👨 And if your family member is an EU citizen, the Family Reunification Visa may be the right route instead.

Want to know more about your specific situation? Book a free call with us and we'll walk you through all of it.

Most people think about the visa first and the taxes later. It’s usually better the other way around.
Here’s a quick breakdown depending on your situation:

💻 Freelancers register as autónomo straight after getting their residence card, pay social security contributions from around €89/month in year one, and file IRPF quarterly — progressive rates from 19% to 47%.

🏢 Employees are mostly covered on the personal side, but their employer needs to either register with Spanish social security or provide a coverage certificate from their home country.

📅 After 183 days in Spain you become a tax resident and pay IRPF on your worldwide income — worth factoring in from day one.

One recent change worth knowing: at renewal, you now need to provide tax declarations for the last two years, not just a certificate of no outstanding debts. The earlier you plan for that, the better.

Tax situations vary depending on your income, employment type, and family situation — always worth speaking to a tax specialist for the specifics. And if you want to get the visa side sorted, book a free call with us.

Ignoring your taxes is the fastest way to lose your Digital Nomad Visa renewal — and the rules have recently changed in a way most people don’t know about yet😳

Previously, all you needed to show at renewal was a certificate confirming no outstanding tax debts in Spain. Now the authorities are asking for tax declarations for the last two years. That’s a significant shift😱

If you’re a freelancer working under a services contract, you’re legally required to register as autónomo and sign up with social security. If you haven’t done that, you’re not just risking a complicated renewal — you could face an inspection and lose your residence before you even get to that stage😰

The logic is straightforward: when you first applied, you made a set of commitments. At renewal, they check whether you kept them.

If you’ve already missed something and your renewal feels uncertain, it’s not necessarily the end. There’s almost always a way forward. Book a free call with us and we’ll work out the options together😎

Once you’re a resident in Spain, one of the first things worth sorting is your Certificado Digital — an electronic certificate that identifies you online and lets you deal with Spanish authorities from your laptop or phone📲

With it, you can file your tax return, get a certificate confirming you have no outstanding tax debts, pay traffic fines, request your registration history, get a criminal record certificate, and even apply for Spanish citizenship — all without a single trip to a government office.

Any adult can get one, whether you’re a Spanish citizen or a foreign resident. If you’re a non-EU resident, you’ll need your NIE first.

To get it, you verify your identity either in person at an accredited office or through video identification online. After that, you install the certificate on any up-to-date browser or your phone, and that’s it.
If you’ve just received your Digital Nomad Visa, getting your Certificado Digital is the very first thing to do. After that comes registering as autónomo and signing up with social security🇪🇸

And if you’re still at the «thinking about it» stage, book a free call with us and we’ll work out the right route for your situation😎

InterNations published their yearly report based on surveys from tens of thousands of people who have actually made the move👇🏻

For the fifth time in a row they put Spain in their top-10 among the best countries to relocate to. It’s the top European destination – ahead of Portugal and Luxembourg😎

For quality of life specifically, Spain came first in the world for the fifth consecutive year, beating Singapore, the UAE, Japan, and Austria.

According to the report, 20% of respondents moved to Spain specifically for the quality of life, and 8% came for a relaxed retirement. Almost half want to stay permanently

People particularly highlight the accessible and high-quality healthcare, reliable public transport, and how easy it is to travel across Europe.
