Landmark Judgment in Egypt: Cairo Economic Court Orders Borrower to Pay €490K ( Around 43 millions EGP) to a European Bank

In a significant judicial development before the Cairo Economic Court, the Litigation Department at our firm successfully obtained a final judgment in favor of a European banking client, ordering an Egyptian borrower company to settle its outstanding indebtedness.

The case arose from a commercial dispute concerning unpaid financial obligations owed to the bank. Following the initiation of legal proceedings and robust representation before the competent economic court, the court rendered its judgment in favor of our client.

The court ordered the defendant company to pay an amount of €490,453.01, representing the outstanding debt as of the date of judicial claim (4 August 2024). In addition, the judgment awarded:

Contractual interest at a rate of 8%, and
Default interest at a rate of 2.5%,

calculated from the day following the date of entitlement (4 August 2024) until full settlement.

This judgment reflects the Egyptian courts’ firm stance on upholding financial obligations and enforcing creditors’ rights, particularly within the framework of the Economic Courts, which continue to play a vital role in resolving complex commercial disputes efficiently and effectively.

The ruling also underscores the importance of proper legal strategy and diligent litigation in securing favorable outcomes in cross-border financial disputes.
