Court outlaws Muslim Brotherhood and freezes all assets
Egyptian Cairo court for urgent matters on 23/8/2013 banned the Muslim Brotherhood from operating and ordered its assets seize, also banned “any institution branching out from or belonging to the Brotherhood, court ruled that a government committee should be created to manage the Brotherhood’s seized assets , the lawsuit for ban of brotherhood was filed by the leftist Tajamua (unionist) Party, which accuses the Brotherhood of involvement in terrorist acts in the country following the army’s overthrow of Mursi in July2013 and accused them of possessing guns.
The judgment of ban passed today 23/9/2013, but it’s not the first time, the group’s ban is the third since it was set up by schoolteacher Hassan Al Bann in 1928. The Brotherhood was first banned in 1948 after the government accused it of plotting to overthrow the then monarchy.
In 1954, the group was banned again and harshly oppressed after a failed attempt on the life of the then president Jamal Abdul Nasser, for which the Brotherhood was blamed.
The Brotherhood won nearly half of parliamentary seats in the first post-Mubarak elections. In mid-2012, its conservative leader Mursi became Egypt’s first democratically elected president until the army deposed him on July 3 following massive street protests against his rule.
This judgment is executive promptly imposed even if an appeal is filed because it’s passed by court of urgent matters.
