One issue many foreigners in the Dominican Republic overlook is driving legally long-term.

A foreign driver’s license is generally only valid for a limited period after entering the country. To properly obtain a Dominican driver’s license through INTRANT, legal residency and a Dominican cédula are normally required.

Many expats continue living and driving in a legal gray area without fully understanding the risks this can create in the event of an accident, insurance issue, or legal dispute.

Living abroad is exciting, but it is also important to do things correctly and protect yourself legally while building your life in another country.

Big news for the southwest region of the Dominican Republic.

The Dominican Republic has set July 2027 as the target date for the opening of the Cabo Rojo International Airport, a key component of the tourism development taking place in Pedernales. The area has already welcomed more than 133,000 cruise passengers and is expected to see additional growth as new tourism projects continue to come online.

According to recent reports, the airport is expected to become a major gateway for the region, supporting the continued expansion of hotels, infrastructure, and tourism-related investment. Between the cruise port, new resorts, improved roads, and now an international airport, Pedernales continues evolving into one of the Caribbean's most closely watched emerging destinations.

It will be interesting to see how this impacts tourism, real estate, and investment opportunities over the coming years.

Many foreigners living in the Dominican Republic simply overstay their tourist period and pay the official exit fee when leaving. While this is commonly tolerated in practice, it is not the same as having legal residency.

Residency provides legal stability, access to banking and financing, easier contracts and services, and long-term peace of mind.

The overstay system may work as a temporary convenience. Residency is what truly allows someone to build a stable and legally established life in the Dominican Republic.

You can handle the residency process yourself, but if you would like guidance, I can also connect you with a reliable attorney. There are different residency options available in the Dominican Republic, typically starting with temporary residency and later transitioning into permanent residency, like the one I personally have.
