Today, the Republic of Moldova 🇲🇩 joins the European Patent Organisation as its 40th member state.

To mark this occasion, the Moldovan flag was raised for the first time at the EPO headquarters in Munich in the presence of Iulian E. Iorga, Director of the State Agency on Intellectual Property (Agentia de Stat pentru Proprietatea Intelectuala a Republicii Moldova), Sergiu Russu, Counselor of the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova to Germany, Josef Kratochvíl, Chairperson of the Administrative Council of the European Patent Organisation and António Campinos, President of the European Patent Office.

🔋 Electric vehicles rely on critical materials like lithium, cobalt and nickel, but demand is rising fast.

Yu Haijun and Xie Yinghao developed a recycling method that recovers these materials from spent lithium-ion batteries and converts them directly into new battery components.

The process is more efficient, uses fewer resources and helps reduce dependence on raw extraction.

They are finalists in the 2026 European .

In parts of Chile, firewood is essential for heating, but it also contributes to dangerous air pollution.

Aníbal Montalva Rodríguez and Miguel Ángel Fernández Donoso developed a solution that works with existing habits. Their living biofilter uses plants to clean chimney smoke, reducing particulate emissions and odours by more than 90%.

It’s already being used in homes, schools and hospitals.
