Malaria has been hard to vaccinate against for one reason: the parasite is a moving target, with vast genetic diversity and multiple life-cycle stages.

Sir Adrian V.S. Hill spent decades working around that. He developed a vaccine that helps the immune system better recognise the parasite.

In 2023, the WHO recommended it for widespread use. It’s now being rolled out across Africa, where it’s needed most.

He is nominated for the European 2026.
