FAMILY REUNION VISA (FRV)

Complete Application Guide

German Embassy Islamabad – digital.diplo.de Portal

Many people ask what documents are needed before starting a Family Reunion Visa application for Germany. To make the process easier, I will explain each stage step by step.

The Family Reunion Visa process generally consists of the following stages:

✅ Step 1 – Gathering the required documents

✅ Step 2 – Completing the online application forms

✅ Step 3 – Uploading documents on the portal

✅ Step 4 – Preliminary review and appointment booking

✅ Step 5 – Visa interview

✅ Step 6 – Role of the Ausländerbehörde

✅ Step 7 – Final decision by the German Embassy

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

📂 STEP 1 – GATHER THE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

Before you create an account or start the online application, make sure you have the following documents available.

👤 Applicant’s Documents

📘 Passport

• Must be valid and up to date.

• If you changed your NADRA ID card after marriage and replaced your father’s name with your spouse’s name, make sure your passport reflects the same information.

• If you do not have a passport yet, obtain one before starting the process.

📜 Birth Registration Certificate (BRC)

• If unavailable, obtain it from your Union Council as per Pakistani Law as this document is very important.

💍 Marriage Registration Certificate (MRC)

• NADRA Marriage Registration Certificate is already issued in English and normally does not require translation.

📄 Nikahnama

• Must be translated by a certified translator into German or English.

• A German translation is recommended.

📸 Biometric Photograph

• The German Embassy has specific photo requirements.

• Follow the specifications available on the digital.diplo.de portal carefully.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

👨‍👩‍👧 Documents of the Spouse Living in Germany

🏠 Meldebescheinigung

• Proof of the spouse’s registered address in Germany.

🪪 Proof of Nationality or Residence Permit

• German citizens should provide a German passport or Personalausweis.

• Non-German citizens should provide a valid residence permit.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🗣️ German Language Requirement

📚 A1 German Language Certificate

• A certificate from a recognized institution such as Goethe-Institut is generally required.

• A1 exam appointments can be difficult to obtain due to high demand.

• An A2 certificate is also accepted and may be a practical alternative.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🏥 Health Insurance

🛡️ Travel / Health Insurance

• Obtain travel or health insurance that covers the required period.

• The insurance should be active at the time it is submitted.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

In the next post, I will explain how to create an account on the digital.diplo.de portal and complete the online application correctly.

If you have any questions regarding Step 1, feel free to ask in the comments.

Sincerely,
Muhammad Haseeb Buttar, LL.M

Why Legal Documents Matter - Before and After Migration to Germany?

Legal documents are official papers issued by government authorities that prove your identity and civil status.

In the context of migration to Germany, legal documents demonstrate your identity, nationality, family relationships, and marital status, and they must be authentic, registered, and often translated for acceptance by German authorities.

Legal Documents & Relevant Laws:

NIC & Passport.

Birth & Marriage Certificate(including Nikkah Nama).

Divorce & Death Certificates.

Before Migration:
Needed for all kind of visa applications especially family reunion visa.

After Migration:
Required for applications for Permanent Residency and citizenship, registering marriages, enrolling children in school etc.

Compliance:
Must be valid under Pakistani law and acceptable to German authorities (certified translations, legalization, or apostille may be required).

We can assist you;

✅ Register or rectify your documents in Pakistan.

✅ Obtain certificates from Union Councils, Municipal Committees & Cantonment Boards.

✅ Get court decrees if needed.

✅ Ensure documents meet German authority standards.

Conclusion:
Legal documents are the foundation of your migration and long-term settlement in Germany. Without them, visas, PR, citizenship, or even marriage registration in Germany can be delayed or refused whereas proper documents mean no delays, no refusals, and smooth settlement in Germany.

Sincerely,

Update in Family Reunion Visa (FRV) for Germany:

The German Embassy (GE) has now shifted the FRV process to an online system since 15.01.26. The applications and documents are being submitted digitally instead of physically.

Some important practical points for applicants:

1. There is no separate space to upload your spouse’s Birth Registration Certificate (BRC) therefore create one single PDF containing both your BRC‘s.

2. There is no separate section for Nikahnama / proof of relationship therefore creat one combined PDF including:

- Marriage Registration Certificate (MRC)
- Nikahnama + English or German translation
- Screenshots of communication
- Wedding photos
- Bank Transactions or any other evidence

3. Upload your health insurance PDF under “Other Documents”.

You can edit your forms and documents before final submission, but once you submit the application, you can only view it, no further changes are possible. So be very cautious while filling in the forms and uploading documents.

Overall, the system appears more streamlined, and hopefully this online transition will reduce processing times once the initial confusion settles.

Good Luck to all of you.

A sigh of relief for all those who were facing delays in their family reunion visas. Thanks German Embassy Islamabad.
