Education System in Poland
Poland’s education system dates back to the Middle Ages. Jagiellon University, for example, was founded in the 14th century, and today is one of the oldest universities in Europe. There are over 400 courses offered in English in Poland, many of them at an undergraduate level. Poland has several well-respected universities, including Jagiellonian University and Warsaw University. Warsaw University is ranked first in the Top Coder international IT ranking, outperforming such well-respected American universities as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The number of higher education institutions in Poland has quadrupled over the past ten years, while the number of students increased fivefold. International students who choose to study in Poland will have the opportunity to receive a quality education in a quickly burgeoning academic environment.

Poland’s medical schools, in particular, are drawing an increasing number of international students. Many international students who have been unable to get into a medical program in their home country choose instead to study medicine in Poland. Although these courses are taught in English, Polish speaking skills are likely to become necessary by the end of the program, when students begin consultations with patients.

All leading universities in Poland offer high-quality programs taught in English, including medicine, engineering, humanities, business, and finance.

Tuition and Cost of Living
As with many other EU countries, Poland offers inexpensive and sometimes free tuition to EU students. For example, English language courses offered at the University of Warsaw cost between £1,300 and £2,500 per year. The majority of course in Poland cost significantly less than in the UK, with the notable exception of medical courses, which have fees of around £10,000 per year.

Poland: Cracow University of Economics
CRACOW, POLAND: The Cracow University of Economics (CUE) was established in 1925, shortly after Poland had regained its independence after World War I. Since then, Cracow University of Economics has become a well-respected institution of higher education. GVSU and CUE (formerly known as the Academy of Economics) have mutually benefited from international cooperation through an exchange that started in 1975.

Formerly the capital of the Polish Kingdom, Cracow is located in southern Poland on the banks of the Wisla River, less than three hours by train from Warsaw and only one hour from the Tatra Mountains. The city is the educational and cultural center of Poland, with an abundance of museums, theaters, concerts, and festivals. Being one of the few major European cities that escaped total devastation during World War II, many of Cracow’s original medieval structures still stand. Cracow has also been designated as a UNESCO world historical site.

The English Track Program offers courses in Polish language and culture, business, economics, political science, international relations, finance, marketing, and more. See CUE’s website for additional information: http://uek.krakow.pl

CUE also offers a Polish Path: Language, Culture and Business program which will focus on Polish culture, history, business communications, economics, language and political systems. This is an ideal program for students interested in pursuing a custom study abroad theme. It is recommended that students consider studying in the Polish path for one year.

Visa Information and Temporary Residence Card
Possession of a valid visa or temporary residence card is solely the responsibility of the student. The staff at the Centre for European Studies will be happy to advise and assist our students with acquiring all of the necessary papers to remain legally in Poland, but responsibility for obtaining and maintaining legal status remains with the student. Students are responsible for contacting the Polish Embassy or Consulate to find out which additional documents are needed to obtain a student visa.

All non-EU citizens who intend to study in Poland for more than 90 days must now have a valid passport and student visa before they arrive in Poland. The visa itself should be free of charge although the local Polish consulate may charge handling fees. EU citizens who intend to study in Poland for more than 90 days must have a valid passport and will need to request a Temporary Residence Card once they have arrived in Krakow.
