Most founders get this wrong when applying for a self-employment residence permit in Germany.

They treat it like pitching.

But the Ausländerbehörde isn’t looking for a pitch.
It’s looking for a clear, structured case that actually holds up on paper.

Over time, we’ve seen how much this comes down to how the story is told, through the business plan, the financials, the details people overlook.

That’s why we partnered with Burkhard Volbracht, who’s been working in business immigration in Berlin for nearly 20 years.

At Drift, we help founders get there faster, without weeks of back and forth trying to figure out what’s missing.

So far, we’re at a 100% success rate.

If you’re going through this process, we’ve put more details on our website.

We asked Daniel Townsend about his experience working with Eva Witt and Friedrich von Jagow, LL.M., and honestly, his reaction made my day.

Daniel is one of my great friends and the founder of Loretta Health.

I think about this a lot. If you’re an immigrant, a founder of color, a woman building something, the friction is higher. Big law firms aren’t really built for early-stage founders. The fit just isn’t there. So you’re left figuring out residency, legal questions, all of it, kind of on your own.

I built Drift because I’ve been that person. And I wanted something better to exist.

Hearing him say he trusts his lawyers... that’s everything. That’s the whole point. People deserve to feel taken care of when they’re going through something that usually feels overwhelming and lonely.

At Drift, we partner with solo lawyers and micro law firms to make their practices more efficient by automating the bureaucracy so they can focus on what actually matters: showing up for people like Daniel.

We’re just getting started.

Berlin is a feeling. Späti at 3AM. Sundays that start at noon. Rent that doesn’t make you cry. 190+ nationalities and somehow everyone just gets it. If you know, you know. 🖤🇩🇪

They are just harder to reach than they should be.

Eva Witt is one of the best immigration lawyers I know.

To get there in Germany, it takes close to a decade:
4–5 years of law school, two state exams, and 2 years of practical training.

And then...

You spend a huge part of your time on admin, unclear cases, missing documents, and back-and-forth. And sometimes 40% of your revenue in lead gen.

Now zoom out.

Half of all legal businesses in Germany (~45,000) are solo lawyers.
They carry a massive part of the supply for consumer legal services and are widely underserved by most legal tech.

Here is the reason.

Because most legal tech are built for top 10% of law firms.

So we built Drift differently.

- Free for lawyers
- We structure cases, handle intake, and reduce admin
- We make it easy for people to find and book a lawyer

92% of legal needs go unmet. We exist to make lawyers more accessible.

Because if lawyers win, people do too.

“Are you proud of your decision to invest in Drift?”

I asked Dr. Daphne Hering, one of our earliest angel investors.

Drift exists because a small group of people decided early that the mission matters.

At Drift, we value angels who are excited by our mission and can contribute with insight, networks, and conviction as we build.

Meet Leander, Co-Founder & COO of Drift.

Lawyer. Founder. Son of an immigrant mother from Tehran.

He studied law in Freiburg, worked in a startup, in Big Law, and even in the German parliament.

And still felt it:

The system may be well-intended — but in practice, access to law is too slow, too complex, and too expensive for most people.

Especially if you didn’t grow up around it.

That’s why he joined Drift.

Because law should be a tool. Not an obstacle.

And access shouldn’t depend on privilege.
