Why are UK founders considering Cyprus for their business and personal tax residency?

Cyprus now applies a 15% corporate tax rate, compared with a UK corporation tax rate that can reach 25% depending on company profits. For founders who relocate properly and qualify for Cyprus Non-Dom status, the treatment of dividends can create an additional difference.

The headline numbers, however, are only part of the decision.

Your personal tax residency, the management and substance of the company, how profits are distributed and the way you exit UK tax residency all need to work together.

In this video, we explain why the Cyprus structure is attracting attention from UK founders and why the details behind the structure matter.

What should you budget for beyond the cost of setting up a Cyprus company?

Company formation is only the starting point. Once incorporated, a Cyprus company may have ongoing costs connected to accounting, statutory compliance, corporate administration, banking, payroll and VAT or VIES requirements, depending on how the business operates.

There is therefore no single annual figure that fits every Cyprus company. Activity, transaction volume, management and operational requirements all affect the real cost.

Our latest carousel breaks down the areas to consider when budgeting beyond incorporation.

The same €1 million in company profit can produce very different after-tax outcomes depending on the jurisdiction and the founder’s personal tax position.

In this comparison, we look at the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Cyprus, and show how corporate tax and the taxation of dividends can affect what ultimately reaches the founder.

Cyprus can be particularly relevant for qualifying individuals because of its 15% corporate tax rate and Non-Dom regime.

The figures should not be viewed in isolation. Tax residency, the business model, source of profits and individual circumstances can materially change the result.

Thinking about setting up a company in Cyprus? The process should start with the structure, not the incorporation documents.

Cyprus company formation involves decisions around the business activity, ownership, management, banking, tax position and ongoing compliance. These factors can determine whether the company is practical to operate and whether Cyprus is the right jurisdiction for the business.

Our latest carousel breaks down 7 important decisions to consider before you register a company in Cyprus.

Cyprus Non-Dom status is one of the main tax considerations for individuals relocating to Cyprus.

Qualifying Cyprus tax residents who are not domiciled in Cyprus may benefit from an exemption from Special Defence Contribution on dividends and most interest income for up to 17 years. Healthcare contributions may still apply depending on the circumstances.

In this video, we explain the basic principle and why Non-Dom status is relevant when planning a move to Cyprus.

Comment NON DOM and we’ll send you the key requirements.

Moving from Germany to Cyprus? Your residence registration and your tax residency are not the same thing.

As an EU citizen, you have the right to live in Cyprus, but you must complete the MEU1 registration, commonly known as the Yellow Slip, within four months of arrival.

It is an important step in establishing your life in Cyprus. It does not, however, automatically make you Cyprus tax resident.

Save this if you are planning your move.

VAT, VIES and OSS each have different registration rules, and waiting until your company has significant turnover can mean you are already late.

VAT registration, intra EU B2B transactions and cross border B2C sales are subject to different triggers and deadlines. Understanding which system applies should therefore be part of your company’s compliance from the outset.

In this video, we break down when each registration may become relevant for a Cyprus company.

If you are unsure which registrations apply to your business or whether action is already required, contact our team for a free consultation.
