Promotion and Protection of Breastfeeding (Amendment) Law of 2025 & Regulations 198/2025
Significant changes to Cyprus' legal framework on breastfeeding came into force, introducing new compliance obligations for employers and persons responsible for certain public places. From 25 June 2026, employers operating in workplaces exceeding 50m² are required to provide a permanent or temporary breastfeeding room for breastfeeding and the expressing and storage of breast milk. Employers must also inform employees of the location of the room and the procedure for its use upon commencement of employment and upon return from maternity leave.
The new legislation also requires designated breastfeeding rooms in a wide range of public places, including airports, ports, shopping malls, higher education institutions, libraries, museums, hotels, hospitals, cinemas, theatres, sports venues, public sector buildings serving the public and banquet halls.
In addition, Regulations 198/2025, which come into force on 4 July 2026, prescribe the minimum specifications and standards that breastfeeding rooms must meet.
Non-compliance may result in fines of up to €7,000, increasing to €8,000 for repeat offences.
With the implementation dates approaching, employers and those responsible for affected public premises should review their facilities and internal policies to ensure timely compliance.
