Town Planning Works: Do You Have a Right to Compensation?

Road widening, infrastructure projects and other town planning measures can significantly affect property owners, from access and use to the value of their property.

Under Cyprus law, where a planning decision substantially reduces the economic value of immovable property, the affected owner may be entitled to compensation.

Importantly, compensation claims may be subject to strict time limits. For certain planning decisions, a notice of claim must be served to the Planning Authority within six months from the notification of the relevant planning decision.

Hiring Non-EU Workers in Cyprus: Know the Rules

Cypriot employers hiring non-EU nationals must navigate specific immigration and employment rules. Depending on the category, approval from the Department of Labour and the Migration Department may be required, together with the appropriate residence and work permit.

Pay Transparency: What may change in Cyprus?

Cyprus is preparing legislation to transpose the EU Pay Transparency Directive.

For employees: you will have greater access to information on how your pay is determined, including the criteria used for pay and career progression. Job applicants should receive the starting salary or salary range and cannot be asked about their previous pay.

For employers: pay and progression must be based on objective, gender-neutral criteria, with additional gender pay-gap reporting obligations for larger companies.

IKEA v. Vlaams Belang: A Trademark Lesson

The CJEU has recently ruled that freedom of expression does not automatically justify the unauthorised use of a famous trademark in political campaigning.

The case arose after Belgian far-right party Vlaams Belang used IKEA’s branding and visual identity for its 2022 “IKEA Plan” on immigration. IKEA challenged the use, arguing that it could harm its reputation. The Belgian court will now decide the dispute, applying the CJEU’s guidance.

Since 2023, our shorter Friday working day has formed an important part of our commitment to creating a flexible, supportive and sustainable working environment.

With effect from September 7th, 2026, our office will operate during the following hours:
Monday–Thursday: 08:00–17:30
Friday: 08:00–14:00
Saturday–Sunday: Closed

Our reception will be available from 08:00 each weekday. Meetings with our lawyers will continue to be arranged by appointment, ensuring that clients receive the appropriate attention and support.

We believe that delivering a consistently high standard of professional service can and should coexist with a healthy work–life balance. These revised arrangements preserve the shorter Friday working day, allowing our people more meaningful time for their families, personal commitments and interests outside work.

At the same time, they are designed to ensure continuity, accessibility and a responsive service for our clients throughout the working week. They reflect the culture of mutual flexibility, responsibility and trust that we continue to promote across our firm.

⚖️ The EUIPO found no likelihood of confusion, noting that the term “kids” is descriptive and the marks’ figurative elements created distinct impressions.

🔑 With the opposition dismissed and costs awarded to Ikids Group, the company can now proceed with its EU trade mark registration, reinforcing its brand across Europe.
