EU Adopts the 21st Sanctions Package Against Russia

The European Union has adopted its 21st package of sanctions against Russia, introducing further restrictions across the energy, financial, crypto and trade sectors, while expanding anti-circumvention measures and significantly increasing the number of designated individuals and entities.

For businesses and financial institutions, these developments underline the importance of robust sanctions compliance, enhanced due diligence, continuous screening and ongoing assessment of cross-border transactions and supply chains.

A timely opportunity to reflect on an important reform for Cyprus.

While our International Trust regime remains one of our greatest strengths, the introduction of a modern Foundations Law would further enhance Cyprus’ attractiveness as an international private wealth jurisdiction.

I am pleased that a draft Foundations Bill has now been prepared by myself, Stella Kammitsi and Paolo Panico under the auspices of STEP Cyprus. The next step is to bring this proposal before Parliament for constructive discussion with all stakeholders.

Meaningful reform is achieved through collaboration, thoughtful dialogue and a shared vision for Cyprus’ future.

We are proud to be associated with the first STEP Europe Introductory Conference in Poland, a significant milestone that reflects the continued growth and strength of the STEP community across Europe.

Our Managing Partner, nickyxenofontos, has been invited to participate as a panellist in the discussion on “Asset Protection or Abuse? Challenging Fiduciary Structures in Litigation”, bringing together leading practitioners and academics from multiple jurisdictions.

Whilst personal circumstances will prevent travel to Warsaw, Nicky will be joining the conference remotely and looks forward to contributing to this important discussion on trusts, fiduciary structures and cross-border asset protection.
