ENROLLMENT at The New Master’s Program – LAW and GENDER (LAWGEM)

An innovative and groundbreaking master’s program in Law and Gender (LAWGEM) at the Faculty of Law, University of Belgrade, is scheduled to commence in the academic year 2024/2025. This program represents a pioneering effort within the region and globally, aiming to systematically and comprehensively incorporate multidisciplinary, gender-sensitive perspectives into the legal studies curriculum. The integration of gender into all legal disciplines is vital for fostering an equitable legal system that recognizes and addresses the unique challenges faced by marginalized communities. By critically examining the interplay between law and gender, this program will empower future and current legal professionals to advocate for equitable policies and practices that challenge traditional notions of justice. Furthermore, as we witness a concerning backlash against gender equality initiatives in various spheres, it becomes increasingly essential to equip legal practitioners with the necessary tools to respond effectively and uphold the rights of all individuals.

💡We are happy to invite you to collaborate in a new, experimental volume to be published in the book series Gender Perspectives in Law, Springer, under the title: Gender, Law, and Power: The South-North Engagement and Action.

➡️ This volume, Gender, Law, and Power: The South-North Engagement and Action would complement and extend the perspectives and understandings provided by books published in the series by opening a new space for dialogue—between the Global South and the Global North.

➡️ Instead of taking the South and the North as self-evident and coherent discursive and political concept-entities, the volume will attempt to bring legal, gender and feminist studies scholars and activists, anthropologists, historians, and social scientists concerned with injustice, oppression and discrimination along the intersecting axes of gender, s*x-orientation, race, class (and caste) from across the globe in conversation with each other.

Women have shared their concern about the erasure of "all female identities" after Johns Hopkins University used the phrase "non-man" to describe le****ns.

The Baltimore-based university received backlash online after defining "le***an" as "a non-man attracted to non-men" in its glossary of LGBTQ+ terms.

The update, which has since been removed from the website, was initially meant to be inclusive of non-binary individuals, who may still identify as le****ns.

However the definition was labeled misogynistic, with social media users pointing out that the guide does not use similarly non-binary-inclusive language for the term "gay man."

Before most men in China begin charting the dollars and cents of their marriage, they must first navigate the potentially costly affair of a “bride price”, offered to the family of their prospective brides.

The exorbitant bride price, or “cai li” as it is known in China, drew reactions of envy and criticism online, according to the Global Times, although the groom-to-be attempted to play down his lavish display.

“This is a local custom, it is very common in Taizhou,” said the man, identified by the Chinese media only as Mr Yan, 30, referring to the Zhejiang city he and his fiancee call home.

Despite recent attempts by the government to rein in “bride prices”, the costly affair of marriages in China shows little sign of abating.

‘Spanish PM apologises for loophole in new s*xual consent law’

Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, has apologised to victims for a loophole in a landmark new law that was intended to toughen penalties for s*xual crimes but has allowed some convicted offenders to reduce their sentences.

The legislation, popularly known as the “only yes means yes” law, came into effect last October. It overhauled the criminal code by making s*xual consent – or lack of it – key in determining assault cases, in an effort to define all non-consensual s*x as r**e.

The law dropped the lesser charge of s*xual abuse and classed all violations as s*xual assault, which carries stiffer penalties. It also cut the minimum and maximum jail sentences, however, leading to some offenders having their terms reduced on appeal.

According to the latest government figures, at least 104 offenders have been released and another 978 have seen their sentences cut. In Spain, sentences can be modified retroactively if a change in the penal code benefits the offender.
