Since 9 October 2026, service marks can be registered and enforced in Suriname.

𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘀: 𝟴 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟳
Owners of existing registrations and pending applications can extend protection to service classes while keeping their original filing or registration date and priority. Proof of use for the services is required.

Suriname follows a first-use system, so registration provides public evidence of your rights and a direct basis to act against infringers.

As Chair of AIPLA's IP Practice in Latin America Committee, he leads the group connecting US counsel with legal developments across the region.

This year the committee is co-organising a panel on a key question in patent law: can an AI system be named as an inventor? More details to follow.

Today is 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆, and the 2026 theme is clean energy.

The marks on a solar panel's label show it has been tested against a standard. Some of these signs can be protected as 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘀. Producers in the Caribbean and Latin America can use the same protection, along with 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘀 for associations and cooperatives.

Many exporters spend years meeting quality and origin requirements without registering the mark that distinguishes their products. Protection is territorial, so it does not automatically extend from one country to another.

𝗘𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 registers and enforces collective and certification marks across the Caribbean and Latin America, from drafting regulations of use to taking action against misuse.
