Happy Lawyer's Day, Panama ⚖️

Today, 9 August, Panama celebrates the Día del Abogado, in memory of Justo Arosemena, the jurist behind the very idea of the Panamanian state.

From Eproint, congratulations to all the lawyers of Panama, and a warm salute to our partner Mariola Vásquez and our Panama team, protecting trade marks, patents and IP rights every day from the heart of the region.

Managing an international trade mark portfolio is so much more than filing.

The Madrid Protocol brings valuable efficiencies by centralising renewals, assignments and administrative recordals. But every trade mark is still examined, protected and enforced under local law across the Caribbean and Latin America.

That is where regional coordination makes the difference. Keeping international and national portfolios aligned. Responding to office actions within local deadlines. Preserving enforcement opportunities before they are lost. Knowing when a direct national filing is the stronger strategic option.

For decades, Eproint has helped clients do exactly that. 40+ jurisdictions. One coordinated strategy across the Caribbean and Latin America.

Every international portfolio is different. If you're reviewing your trade mark strategy across the region, let's talk about the right approach.

Ten years with Karla Corrales.

Today Karla is our Director of IP Practice for Costa Rica, leading the department, mentoring our team members and setting the standard the team follows. Her practice is recognised year after year by the international directories that assess IP work in the region.

Thank you, Karla!

For ten years of showing up with the same standard, whether the matter was routine or the deadline was impossible. For the clients who now call and ask for you by name. For the colleagues you have trained and backed up along the way. For choosing this path every single day and every single year.

Ten years, and the standard has never moved away from excellence. Here is to what comes next!

A huge congratulations, Karla! 🎉

The Madrid System now covers more than 130 countries. In the Caribbean and Latin America, however, only ten are currently members.

In his article, Carlos Corrales-Azuola, Partner at Eproint Costa Rica, explores both sides of the Madrid Protocol:
• One application, one language, and one renewal date across more than 115 member jurisdictions.
• No universal trade mark exists. Every office examines applications under its own legislation, and local counsel remains essential when refusals or oppositions arise.
• When direct national filing is the stronger commercial choice. In practice, most international filing strategies end up being hybrid.

With 26 years of experience across 40+ jurisdictions in the Caribbean and Latin America, Eproint advises clients on both Madrid Protocol and direct national filing strategies to help build efficient and commercially sound trade mark portfolios.

Justice has no borders, and neither does the protection of innovation.

Today, July 17th, marks the World Day for International Justice, the anniversary of the Rome Statute that established the International Criminal Court in 1998.

Eproint carries that same commitment to fairness and accountability across the Caribbean and Latin America.

Can the State sell its citizens' biometric data? In Costa Rica, the answer just became clearer.

Published on the IAPP, a new analysis by María del Pilar López, Partner at Eproint in Costa Rica, examines Resolution No. 029-2026-RF of the Prodhab, which established that the Supreme Electoral Tribunal cannot commercialise biometric data without express statutory authorisation.

The article explains what the resolution decides, where it is right, where it leaves questions open, and what it means for any entity processing personal data.

A new publication adds to the region's intellectual property literature.

Eproint partners Luis Diego Castro and Simón Valverde co-authored Chapter 7 of the book Innovation Management for Business Competitiveness, published in Spanish by Ediciones Díaz de Santos as part of ALTEC's book series (Spain).

Their chapter, "Intellectual Property and Its Application in Innovation Processes," explores how intellectual property can serve as a strategic tool for innovation by protecting intangible assets and strengthening the competitiveness of businesses in an increasingly knowledge-driven economy.

The book was edited by Dr. Antonio Hidalgo Nuchera (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid) and Dr. Rafael Herrera González (Universidad de Costa Rica), and is available in print and digital formats.

Millions of dollars in counterfeit goods.

Fake World Cup shirts. Seized championship rings. The list is endless.

That was the backdrop for Eproint Partner Vanessa Cabrera's talk at the IV AIPPI CA-Caribbean Regional Group Congress in Santo Domingo, where she spoke on the panel "Trade Mark Protection: Playing to Win," presenting on tools to combat trade mark infringement around major sporting events.
