U.S. SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP

The rule of law prevails when constitutional guarantees are upheld above political expediency.

I welcome the landmark judgment of the United States Supreme Court of 30 June 2026 reaffirming the constitutional protection of birthright citizenship. Beyond its domestic significance, the decision serves as an important reminder that constitutional democracies must exercise executive power within the limits of the law while respecting international human rights obligations.

The recent election of Rebecca Enonchong as Vice President (Vice-Chair) of the International Chamber of Commerce marks a significant milestone in global business governance and in African representation within international economic institutions. Her elevation to one of the most influential positions in the worldโ€™s largest business organisation symbolises the growing impact of African entrepreneurship, digital innovation, and female leadership on international commerce. The appointment is particularly historic, as it places an African woman at the centre of an institution that represents millions of businesses across more than 170 countries.
Rebecca Enonchongโ€™s remarkable journey stems from a distinguished intellectual and legal heritage. She is the daughter of DR Henry Ndifor Abi Enonchong, the renowned Cameroonian constitutional lawyer, scholar, and traditional ruler of Besongabang in Manyu Division. Her father played a foundational role in developing legal institutions in Cameroon, establishing the Federal Cameroon Bar Association and making significant contributions to constitutional scholarship through influential publications on federalism and governance. This environment of public service, scholarship, and leadership profoundly shaped Rebeccaโ€™s worldview and commitment to social transformation.
Born in Cameroon and later educated in the United States, Enonchong demonstrated entrepreneurial instincts at an early age. She attended the Catholic University of America, where she earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in economics. Her educational background provided a strong analytical foundation, enabling her to understand both market dynamics and development challenges. Even as a student, she displayed exceptional business acumen, progressing from door-to-door sales to management responsibilities while still a teenager.
Before founding her own enterprise, Enonchong gained valuable professional experience at the Inter-American Development Bank and later at Oracle Corporation. Exposure to global technology markets and enterprise solutions convinced her that information technology would become a transformative force in emerging economies. At a time when Africaโ€™s digital economy remained largely underdeveloped, she recognised opportunities that many investors and business leaders had overlooked.
In 1999, Enonchong founded AppsTech, a global provider of enterprise application solutions headquartered in the United States. Under her leadership, the company became a respected technology firm serving clients in more than forty countries. As an Oracle Platinum Partner, AppsTech demonstrated that an African-founded technology company could compete successfully in highly sophisticated international markets. The companyโ€™s growth challenged stereotypes about African entrepreneurship and established Enonchong as one of the continentโ€™s most successful technology executives.
Beyond her corporate achievements, Enonchong became a central figure in Africaโ€™s innovation ecosystem. She chaired ActivSpaces, one of Cameroonโ€™s pioneering technology incubators, and later led AfriLabs, a network linking hundreds of innovation hubs across Africa. Through these institutions, she supported thousands of entrepreneurs, fostered startup development, and strengthened the infrastructure needed for technological innovation on the continent. Her work helped position African startups as increasingly important participants in the global digital economy.
Enonchongโ€™s influence extends into venture capital and entrepreneurial finance. She co-founded the Cameroon Angels Network and helped establish the African Business Angels Network, both of which aim to expand access to early-stage financing for African innovators. Through mentorship, investment, and advocacy, she has consistently argued that Africaโ€™s economic future depends on empowering local entrepreneurs rather than relying exclusively on external development assistance. Her contribution has therefore been both economic and institutional, helping to create the structures through which African innovation can flourish.
Equally notable is her role as a rights advocate and public intellectual. Enonchong has frequently used her public platform to defend entrepreneurs, advocate for digital rights, promote gender inclusion, and challenge regulatory practices that stifle innovation. Her activism has earned her respect far beyond the technology sector. She has become one of Africaโ€™s most recognisable voices on technology governance, entrepreneurship, and economic empowerment, demonstrating that business leadership can coexist with social responsibility and civic engagement.
International recognition naturally followed these achievements. Over the years, she has served on numerous global boards, including the WHO Foundation, Venture Capital for Africa, the United States Export-Import Bankโ€™s advisory bodies, and the International Chamber of Commerce. She has also received prestigious awards from organisations such as the World Economic Forum and the Royal Academy of Engineering, and has been repeatedly recognised as one of Africaโ€™s most influential women and business leaders. These honours reflect both her entrepreneurial success and her contribution to the global development discourse.
The election of Rebecca Enonchong to the vice-presidency of the International Chamber of Commerce marks the culmination of decades of achievement across business, technology, philanthropy, and public advocacy. It is not merely a personal triumph but also a landmark moment for Africa and for women in global economic leadership. Her ascent from Besongabang, through the world of enterprise technology and innovation policy, to the leadership of one of the worldโ€™s foremost business organisations illustrates the growing integration of African expertise into global governance. As the first African woman to attain this position, Enonchong embodies a new generation of leaders whose influence transcends geography and whose careers demonstrate the transformative potential of entrepreneurship, education, and principled leadership.
