📐 10° of Separation House 🏡

"The house, assuming its maximum footprint as a square, is divided into two equal, 16m x 8m rectangles, each positioned perpendicularly to a point in the curved front lot line, resulting in a rotation of a 10° angle. The interstitial space between the two rectangles caused by the rotation, the "wedge" as it is termed, connects the two rectangular volumes as a grand hallway on all three floors.

A more earthy, natural, and dark color is chosen so that the buildings can blend with its rich forest, especially during winter.

In the front yard, near the main entry walkway is erected a 4' x 4' stone slab above grade, cut into a 10° right triangle in plan, which is an extension of the wedge of the building. This freestanding stone is a prelude to what lies ahead inside the house. As a totem for the house, the name of the project, 10° of Separation, is chiseled on the stone surface."

The North York Ravine House 🏞️🏡

"When a young family with three children moved into a mid-century modern bungalow on the edge of a North York ravine, they were excited about the house's natural surroundings and its modernist style. However, the house was ill-suited for the contemporary family's needs.

The architects began by opening up the interior and replacing a series of small disconnected rooms with an airy living, dining, and kitchen area that spans almost the entire length of the main floor. By replacing the rear wall with a floor-to-ceiling glass curtain wall, the architects opened the house to light and created a virtually seamless connection between the interior and the ravine beyond.

The resulting house appears modestly changed from the street, while on the inside, its design feels even more connected to its original modernist vision: clean, light-filled, and highly functional. What really makes it a DB Studio project though are the playful elements, designed for the joy of a young family, that bring new life to the house for the next generation."

Housing crisis: Feds stick by immigration plan, rethink international student flows

"The alarm bells are becoming bull horns: Canada's housing supply isn't keeping up with the rapid rate of population growth.

But the Liberals are doubling down on their commitment to bring more people into the country, arguing that Canada needs high immigration to support the economy and build the homes it desperately needs.

That's because Canada's aging population risks straining public finances as health-care needs rise and the tax base shrinks, Immigration Minister Marc Miller said in an interview with The Canadian Press.
