Some journeys begin long before law school.

For Reilly (Lawyer), choosing a legal career was about using opportunity to create opportunity and giving back to the community that shaped her.

In her journey, Reilly shares how learning the law became a way to support First Nations and Indigenous groups through meaningful, practical advocacy.

Self-government creates opportunities for First Nations to exercise greater authority over the decisions that shape their communities and their future.

Aaron Christoff (Partner, Cochrane Sinclair LLP) shares the example of Whitecap Dakota Nation, where he and Max Faille were part of the legal team that helped negotiate the Nation’s historic self-government treaty. Since coming into effect, the agreement has created new opportunities for Whitecap Dakota Nation to exercise its governance and continue building on its long-standing vision for the community.

Stories like this show what can happen when Nations have greater space to shape governance on their own terms, and why these developments deserve greater attention across Canada.

Mentorship isn’t always about watching from the sidelines. Sometimes, it means being trusted with work that pushes you beyond what you thought you were ready for.

For Adam Miller (Articling Student, Cochrane Sinclair LLP), that trust has been an important part of learning, taking on meaningful responsibility, receiving thoughtful feedback, and building the confidence and skills that come from doing the work firsthand.

Growth happens when opportunity and guidance go hand in hand.

Cochrane Sinclair Partner and Manitoba Bar Association President Stacey Soldier recently brought greetings to Manitoba’s newest lawyers at the 2026 Call to the Bar Ceremony.

In her remarks, Stacey encouraged the newly called lawyers to recognize both the privilege and responsibility that come with entering the profession, and to use their influence to protect the rule of law, strengthen public trust and help create a legal system in which more people can see themselves represented.

Her message to the new lawyers was clear: “Be the reason people still believe in good lawyers and justice.”

Congratulations to everyone called to the Bar, and to the families, friends and mentors who supported them throughout their journey.

Understanding today's legal issues often begins with understanding history.

Aaron Christoff (Partner, Cochrane Sinclair LLP), a Nehiyaw (Cree) citizen of Saulteau First Nations (Treaty 8 ), explains why historical context is essential to understanding many of the Indigenous law issues shaping British Columbia today.

One example is the Cowichan decision, which has generated significant public discussion about Aboriginal title in British Columbia. As Aaron explains, decisions like this are closely connected to the province's unique history, where most of the land was never covered by historical treaties, leaving important legal questions that continue to be addressed today.

Not every case ends with the outcome you're hoping for. But every experience offers an opportunity to learn.

For lawyers, growth often comes from understanding why a decision was made, gaining insight into different perspectives, and using those lessons to better advocate for clients in the future. Those moments can strengthen not only the work on a current file, but the approach taken on every case that follows.
