Most September friction between co-parents isn't about anything big.

It's about who was supposed to sign the permission form, and who the school called first when a kid got sick at 11am.

Five small things, sorted in one conversation before the first week starts. The slides have wording you can copy, since starting the conversation is usually the hardest part.

Save this before school starts — or send it to the person you co-parent with.

If you and your co-parent haven't decided who makes school decisions this year… just remember that the school will work from whatever it has on file.

So, that might be last year's form...
Or, it might be one parent's word...

And, that means it might be a default neither of you chose.

I see this every fall: two parents who both assumed they'd be consulted, and a school that only ever had one name to call.

Deciding it yourselves takes one conversation. Having it decided for you takes considerably longer to undo.

Not sure what your agreement actually says about school decisions? It's worth checking before September.

[Save this as a reminder or send it to someone who might need the reminder!]

Collaborative law can look very different from what people expect.

You still have your own lawyer. The process is structured. Agreements can be legally binding. Children can have a voice.

And in many cases, the process can be more efficient than going to court.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out. We can help you understand your options and what a path forward could look like.

Separation is emotional. There’s no doubt about that.

It’s personal. And it can bring out fear, grief, anger, and uncertainty.

But the legal process does not have to add more harm.

Collaborative family law gives families a private, respectful way to work through separation without going to court. It keeps the focus on open information, thoughtful problem-solving, and agreements that can support your family long after the paperwork is signed.

Sometimes the most helpful legal advice is not the easiest to hear.

But it can help you make decisions your future self, and your children, will thank you for.

If you are separating in Manitoba and want to understand whether collaborative law may be the right fit, we can help you explore your options!

When you hire a family lawyer, you get to choose the kind of process you’re walking into.

Collaborative law means your lawyer is there to help you reach an agreement — not win a battle.

It means sitting at a table with your spouse (and your lawyers) to build something that actually works for your family.

Not handing the decisions over to a judge who doesn’t know you.

It’s a different way through. And for a lot of families, it’s a better one.

Swipe to see what that looks like in practice. 💙

Planning a trip with your kids this summer?

If you’re co-parenting, there’s one thing you need before you book: a travel permission letter.

Without it, you could be stopped at the border — even with your own child.

Here’s what you need to know before you go. →
